Diary > Tuesday 22nd September
« on: Tuesday 22 September 20 23:33 BST (UK) »
Another lovely warm and sunny day. Read the news this morning, it's all horribly depressing.

Took the usual route for my walk, across the field, through the woods then went down the narrow bit too. I don't usually encounter anyone along there but today there was a man, then a woman with two dogs, then a group of six women. Managed to find places to stand aside to let everyone past. Perhaps everyone was taking advantage of the weather, can't believe how much cooler it's forecast tomorrow.
Came home via the longer way round. My friend J is on holiday this week and was hoping to go away so I knew it was unlikely that we'd be going for our long walk.

After lunch I went to the nurseries. I was intending taking out the bedding plants from one of the front beds and replacing with bulbs and pansies. Unfortunately they seemed to have had a run on pansies, there were some in the greenhouse but not ready yet. None of the six packs of coloured heathers either.  Was looking at a silvery coloured plant, no details of what it was, asked another customer if she knew what it was. She did what I should have done  - looked at the side of the pot. She spotted some that were in a six pack with others labelled Autumn planting. I bought those, it was £11.99,one of the other plants was a heuchera, they're £6.99 individually. A bit smaller but it'll grow. Also bought more bulbs.

Back home, set about planting them, moved things around in some of the pots. Then did some weeding, dug out some more roots of invasive plants.

Fish for tea again. Prepared ingredients for bolognese to put in the slow cooker tomorrow before I forget the mince is there!

Going for lunch with my friend A tomorrow, looking forward to that. Nice to have a bit of social life however restricted.
Haven't had an evening out at the pub for more than six months, looks like a while before I'll be doing that again. News from Boris pretty much as expected, the media had all the salient points during the day,

Bell, Salter, Street - Devon, Middlesbrough.
Lickess- North Yorkshire, Middlesbrough.
Etherington - North Yorks and Durham.
Barker- North Yorks
Crooks- Durham
Forster- North Yorks/Durham
Newsam, Pattison, Proud - North Yorks.
Timothy, Griffiths, Jones - South Wales

Roobarb- you’ve certainly been busy in the garden to day... I’m sure it’ll look lovely in the spring when the bulbs come up... I like pansies too. Our pink geranium in a pot outside the front door is still flowering well.... I keep taking off the dead flowers and more seem to come, this is now it’s 4th year and left in all year bought for the grand sun of .99p so it’s certainly earned  it’s keep! Good to get a walk in before those arctic winds start blowing!
Great to hear you’re off out for lunch too...

My day

Woke again to lovely sunshine and flung all windows and doors open...Possibly for the last time!
After breakfast went on the computer to sort out the order I’d received from a customer... officially we closed the business but I struggle to say no when someone phones up wanting stuff... spent some time sorting it out and had to then dash for a shower then off to Tuesday morning coffee... I took the rest of the cake my daughter had made just enough left for 4 slices...
Sat out in the sunshine which was a real tonic... we discussed what next week might look like weather wise and if we’d still be able to meet up!
Lunch time by the time we left!
OH and neighbour had been up in our loft as we’d had problems with hot water when the family were here...like after 3 showers on Sunday there wasn’t a drop coming out of any hot taps until Monday morning.... turns out it was something to do with the ball cock on the tank...
After lunch sat outside reading trying to make the best of the sunshine....
Had a game scrabble had to stop midway as neighbour came to help fix the ballcock .... he stayed for a cuppa and a chat... he loves to natter! His wife had been out shopping and returned and he was still chatting!
Quickly finished our scrabble game and I got soundly beaten now down two games.... not going to challenge him again
Got dinner ready cod steaks in the oven cooked over potatoes, peppers, chorizo, tomatoes and mushrooms.. spread mixture of cream cheese ( low fat) and pesto on top of the fish..
Had to dash off to meet S to deliver face coverings and stuff I’d ordered for her...
Nearly 7-30 by the time we had dinner... finished in time to watch Boris outline new rules... good to see he’s not changed meeting 6 in or out... hope they implement other rules more vigorously than before...
Watched some tv...
Tomorrow must do the ironing, some yogalates and cut out 🌈 scrub tops.... that’s the plan anyway!

Hope others have been able to take advantage of sunshine...

We must socialise in the limited way permitted as far as we are able.
Good walks and chatting with total strangers if that is what's available.
Enjoy your lunch out today Roobarb.

There is a tub of blood red pansies outside a neighbours door here. So pretty.
Very grey yesterday, but dry. Walked to meet a friend for an outdoor coffee in the morning.
Returned the budgie cage in the afternoon and then walked along the front before tea.
The forecast for the sunny south west is daily rain until the weekend, and then everyday for the following week.

2 very interesting programmes on TV. "The Big Dig" preparing the route of the HS2, and "Write Offs" looking at adult literacy.  I did watch the Address to the Nation, but to me it seemed all just a load of empty blether.

We're still in a lockdown area so no visiting for us. Did lots of weeding knowing that it was forecast to rain Wednesday and it was correct- it's very wet here today. Saw the NHS thank you spitfire on its way home last night . Only got a blurred photo on the phone as it was too high up, but a very distinctive engine sound and outline in the sky. Indoors jobs only today .

I had to return shoes I had bought online, decided to take them back to the only shop in Essex by that name, it was a beautiful day, returned the shoes then decided to walk the longest pier, tide was on the turn and in the shallowist were hundreds of grey mullet , so I  was told, fishermen not allowed to fish there, only on the end of the pier, had a delicious coffee and cake where Jamie Oliver had his programme from at the end of the pier,  turned into a lovely cafe , would recommend  it for a stop
I had noticed as we drove that my wedding ring  finger was swollen, used an ice bag but no joy, so my husband helped me get my engagement ring off, what a performance and I might add pain, got that off after a struggle but my wedding band is still on, got a very swollen finger this morning, can hardly  move wedding band, I think I will need to have it sawn off, the ring not the finger!!,  hate the idea, been on for 56 years apart from having it enlarged, so I have to make a decision, if it gets sawn off I will buy another, can't walk about with no wedding ring after all these years
Woken up this morning with a painful finger, wonder why it was swollen in the first place, that has put a dampener on things, but hey ho, that is miner compared to some families right now
I have been looking at Russian snowdrops, they look really nice, yesterday autumn began, so time to put bulbs in soon
Take care folks, we have  to keep our chins up

There is a video on this Louisa Maud, which shows how to use dental floss to remove a ring.
You may have tried this already - but just in case you haven't......

Thank you, I have, gosh I thought my finger was going to fall off, it was painful, it might be arthritis or similar but it seems to be the only finger, leading to the heart if that has got anything to do with it

Even put a jug of water in the freezer for a few seconds, gosh I thought my hand would drop of having been frozen, was a bit of a laugh really but very painful experience

Might see the jeweller, as long as it is my ring he cuts off and not my finger, it hasn't actually sunk into the flesh but it is hard to twist round, felt a bit panicky to be honest

Thank you once again

I took my Mum to have her wedding ring cut off as it was so tight on her finger it was making a groove. It was a straight forward process and the lady that did it was lovely and didn’t charge a penny just said that she usually asked if people would like to put something in the charity box.

She has a special tool which looked like a slim ducks beak, the bottom part slid under the ring to protect the finger and the top part had a little cutting wheel and a butterfly key a bit like a tin opener. It took seconds. She then got her to rub some hand cream on the finger and gently slide it off.

She advised that Mum massaged it with hand cream every day and waited 2/3 months to allow her finger to return to normal so she could have her finger measured for it’s true size. The ring was then re sized and thickened, it was 50+years old and worn thin. Mum recycled odd bits of gold jewellery for this.
I was so pleased I encouraged her to do this as Dad died a couple of years later and it would have been a sad thing to do at that time.
Best of luck.

My wedding ring was a J,really tiny.
My hands and feet were swollen at the end of my third pregnancy.
No home births in Belgium and Nuns  who were Midwives were at Maternity Clinics.
I said I was not going into such a clinic without a wedding ring !
So OH bought a silver one that.looked like white gold
Own ring bsck on again but as the years passed knuckles swollen with arthritis ,so for Ruby Wedding a new ring .
OH then wore my ring on his little finger left hand ,but he was left handed and it wore so thin.
It was so sad when it was given back to me after his death.
It is just too big to be safe for me to wear again on my little finger.
We got six silver plated spoons with it when we bought it.
Present from the Jeweller.
We thought we were rich!
Well we were, he had common sense ,a hard worker ,truly decent and was soooo good looking.
Me ,well, daft, but determined to “ make a go of it “ just to prove to people who thought I was too young that I wasn’t.
He made it easy.
I am so sorry that youngsters now have this hanging over them, pretty much out of their control, isn’t it.
Such busy gardeners amongst you and lovely  meals prepared ,sewing, and walking.
The programme about the big dig is very interesting, another also re The High Speed railway unearthed a very sad burial place, not that they all are not .
It was specifically for girls and women who were in the sex trade, almost all the skeletons showed signs of advanced Syphilis ,bone degeneration etc.
The shocking thing was the skeletal evidence  showed so many were in their very early teens ,pubic arch closure etc. From late 1700’s .
So they must have been children of possibly under 12 when their life of vice commenced.
So hardly of their own free will.

Well Boris did not say much really, still mixed messages and confusion.
If only we could get the message to everyone.
Some are still in denial.

Look after yourselves ,keep the news coming,it is a record of daily life which was the original idea .

Just interrupted by my sister, on the phone.
Well her social life seems very busy and interesting !
Amazing, mind you how these things dare not affect life in Wilmslow!
There is no crime there and so much that happens elsewhere somehow does not get there .
I would not be surprised if Covid 19  had been turned away!

Well bathroom a better colour ,more like a good blend in with the tiles.
Having a cuppa now ,would love a bath but better give the paint a good few hours.
Ceiling done and little wall above the door ,just one full wall to do.
Does not look as if it needs a second coat, good coverage ,but it will.

Home made fish pie for tea with little peas and roasted tomatoes .
Salmon, smoked haddock and white haddock .
Yoghurt for afters.
Some pears I got last weekend are now so juicy and sweet ,oh,  that  reminds me, three more figs will be ready, must look.Got some cream .
So cheerio, Look after yourselves and kind thoughts to those with worries ,.
it must be doubly hard at this time .
Viktoria.
