JOHN BRUNKER NIXON or NICKSON
« on: Wednesday 23 September 20 08:42 BST (UK) »
I am trying to help out an old friend who doesn't know how to find what he wants, which is to find out the parents of John Brunker Nixon/Nickson. I have told him it is most unlikely but you never know. John is supposed to have been born in 1789, but is not sure whether it was in Ireland or Scotland, as he had the name ARGYLE shown on his property in Monaghan.

I have searched the Scottish BDM and found four John Nixon about the same time. He thought John's father may have been Charles but not sure. None had the Brunker middle name, and I'm not sure yet about the connection of the Brunker name to the family.

I have found that John, wife Mary (Swan) who were married in Monaghan on 3 October 1820, and their 5 children had come to Australia in 1834 on the ship "Jessie"  into Sydney and later settled in Wagga Wagga, NSW. On the passenger list their surname was shown as NICKSON, but used the shorter version once they arrived.

He also mentioned the names Coothill and Rockcory but is not sure if they are the areas they were born or lived in Monaghan. He also mentioned that John had worked as a supervisor of convict labour on John McArthur's property in Camden before going to Wagga Wagga, but still trying to confirm that.

I'm hoping you may be able to assist or point us in the right direction.

I can see a transcript of a Church of Ireland marriage between Charles Arkie Nixon and Mary Ann Brunker on 19 October 1787, St. John's Kilcrow (Ematris parish Monaghan).

He also mentioned the names Coothill and Rockcory but is not sure if they are the areas they were born or lived in Monaghan.

Thanks to everyone for your assistance in sorting this out. I had a lot of the local details, but the ones I didn't have were very helpful.
I have been trying to see if I could get back further than John Brunker Nixon's parents, but I don't  seem to be able to successfully navigate the Irish online sites.
Thanks again

Further to my last reply, I am trying to see what connection there is, if any, after seeing an interesting article (Wiki Tree) that showed a JOHN NIXON BRUNKER, who came to Australia in 1822 and lived in the Central part of NSW. He was born in 1788 in Rockcorry, County Monaghan, Ireland, father - John Brabazon Brunker, and Mother Catherine Foster, and married a MARY ANNE McGREEVY, He was a convict on the "Countess of "Harcourt" in 1822, and later became an Overseer at Parramatta Hospital.

This is a variation on our JOHN BRUNKER NIXON, son of Charles Arkie Nixon and Mary Ann Brunker born 1792 in County Monaghan and died in 1854 in Wagga Wagga in the NSW Riverina. My old friend (in his 80's) said he can remember his family mentioning the name Arkie when he was a lot younger so the parents of his John Brunker Nixon appears correct.

I can understand the connection of the names Nixon & Brunker in his ancestor, but wonder about the Nixon connection in John Nixon Brunker, unless it shows in earlier generations. Also both John's lived in the same area of County Monaghan and only 4 years apart.

I am hoping you might be able to shed some light on the problem.

Hi,
I have just received a photo (attached) of an Orangemen Sash from my friend, and I have been searching the sashes online without success. I am hoping you can assist in finding the location in Ireland it belongs to and any other information that might help.
