Henry Swift Quebec City
« on: Wednesday 23 September 20 14:33 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if there is a city/street directory for Quebec City. My ancestor, Henry Swift, was born in 1827 in Quebec City and died in 1899 in Quebec City. I have the 1861-1891 census for him. The early ones have him listed in Banilieau South which I understand is a "suburb". Henry is said to have lived on St. Louis Road and am hoping that a street directory might help me verify this fact. Would St. Louis Road be situated in Banilieau South?

Hi,

The Quebec city directories are here.
https://numerique.banq.qc.ca/patrimoine/details/52327/3690696

Choose the year, and then you have the option of either alphabetical or street. They are slow to
load and a bit finicky. :P

Thank you. I have gone to the site and it appears it is having some difficulties. Unfortunately my French is very limited.

Hi,

Yes, there is a warning about "lenteur"...slowness but it does load eventually.

If you use Chrome there is a built in translator. But, you don't need much French, alphabetical - alphabetique, street - rue.

There was a Henry Swift, stevedore (arrimeur) at St. Louis Road in 1884 to 1890. I have not checked earlier or later.

Thank you. I have been able to search the directories and found Henry Swift on St. Louis Road from 1877 on. Do you know if St. Louis Road is considered to be in Banilieau South/Banilieau of the Parish of Notre-Dame?

I've circled St. Louis Rd, minutes walk to Notre Dame Cathedral.   I can't find a map that shows old parishes as compared to nowadays.  I would assume they are in the same parish.
