Charles Golding born about 1815 Westmeath Ireland
« on: Thursday 24 September 20 05:35 BST (UK) »
Looking for the birth of Charles Golding between April and August 1815 in Westmeath Ireland. Parent are (from his death certificate) Charles Golding and Mary Murray.
Also looking for their marriage or any other children.

Charles Golding was convicted 1840 in Cavan, Ireland and sentenced to 10 years transportation to NSW, Australia for cow stealing. He spent about a week in Kilmainham Prison in Dublin before coming over on the King William ship.

He got his ticket of leave in 1845 and Certificate of Freedom in 1850 and presumed to have married Elizabeth Cullen (nee Hill) in 1850 in Queanbeyan NSW. However their marriage registration cannot be found anywhere on NSW BDM website. Various certificates say they married St Marys Sydney, Queanbeyan and also Maitland NSW but cannot figure it out.

He had 6 children with Elizabeth. These children were born in Sydney area. He died in 1879 and buried in a now dyfunct cemetery known as Coopers Flat with his wife Elizabeth.

Any help much appreciated.

Stephanie.

As Civil Registration records (including births) are largely only available from 1864 onwards, the hope would be to find a baptismal record for Charles. However, as there isn't any baptismal record coming up in the indexes for Charles c.1815 or a marriage for his parents, if anybody has access to the British Newspaper Archives, you might look up the Newry Telegraph of 5th March, 1840. From the snippet that I can see, it appears that Charles Golding was found guilty of stealing a bullock and a heifer on 17th Dec., near Castlepollord, County Westmeath. Being in the north of the county, it might explain why he was tried in Cavan. The article might provide some information as to where Charles was actually from in Westmeath, possibly the Castlepollard area.

There is one record for the surname Golding in the Tithe Applotment Books, 1830 for the Killucan area of Westmeath. There are two records for Golding (or similar surnames) in the Griffith's Valuation for Westmeath, one in Kilbeggan, the other in Athlone however none are with a first name Charles.

What evidence do you have that he was born between those months in 1815?
Marcello, Griffiths would have done the Valuation in Westmeath after Charles left, I think.
Edit. Do you know Charles' religious denomination?

Castlepollard comes under Delvin Superintendent Registrar's District for registration of births, marriages and deaths. As Marcello said, registration of births began in 1864. Registration of deaths and marriages in Catholic churches also began 1864. There were a few BMD registrations for Golding, Goolding, Goulding in Delvin Sup. Reg. District in 1860's. There were also Golding, Golden and Goulding BMDs in Athlone and Mullingar Sup. Reg. Districts in that decade.
Civil registration of marriages in Church of Ireland and at registry offices began 1845. There were a few Golding and Golden marriages registered in Athlone and Tullamore Sup. Reg. Districts 1850's and early 1860's. A marriage between a Catholic and a Protestant had to take place in C. of I. or at a registry office to be legal then.

There is 1 entry for GOULDING in Kilcleagh civil parish (Athlone Union)
7 for GOLDEN in Killulagh, Rathgare and St. Mary civil parishes, (Castletowndelvin Union*), Kilcleagh and St. Mary civil parishes (Athlone Union) and Foyran civil parish (Granard Union)
*Castletowndelvin Union became Delvin Union.
I searched separately for Goulding and Golden.  Ticking the similar spellings box for Golding didn't find them.
The only Golding I could see in County Cavan in Griffiths' Valuation was an Edward Golding in Killashandra civil parish. As well as his own holding he was immediate lessor for others.

Hi Maiden Stone
Thanks for your replies.. I got the birthdate from looking at when he was at Kilmanheim Gaol and his record said he was 24 (13 April 1840) and then he was sent to Australia on the ship King William and his convict indent says his 25 (17 Aug 1840) so I know he had his birthday in the range I had written as this was the time he travelled to Australia.
His certificate of freedom in 1850 says he was born 1815.
thanks
Stephanie.
