Enos Crummett and Eliza Jane Locke - father and daughter???

Have you managed to find that Elizabeth Locke in 1871?

No I can’t find her in 1871. Concern is that she is Elizabeth rather than Eliza Jane.

Do you know the details of her NZ death certificate?  It should have both parents names, where she was born etc. (but of course only as far as the informant knew them, but sometimes a lie is as good as the truth).

Just been reading through all the notes again. She celebrated her birthday in December. She was 86 years old when she died in 1951 so her birth would be December 1865. Her children and grandchildren were always told her father was Enos Locke. She had a harsh childhood and recounted a story of being dressed up for visits by smart people who had a carriage. So maybe in the workhouse being visited by the Board of Guardians. She didn’t know her parents. I am wondering if she sort of adopted Enos Crummett as a father figure.

Thanks for this information. We don’t have the death details. If she didn’t know her parents and her descendants were always told her father was a Enos Locke then that’s what they would have told the registrar.

It follows that William Locke on her first marriage certificate must be made up.

Her death cert might reveal her birthday which would be a plus, if she was born in December she might have a January 1866 qtr registration if she was born late December
