Robert Turner (1750-1796) a miller at Hyndford
« on: Friday 25 September 20 08:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for some help re my 4xgreat grandfather, Robert Turner, a miller from Hyndford, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Research by my late uncle in the 1960s had him as 1750-1796, when he died doing a brave deed at the celebrations after the naval Battle Of Camperdown (off Netherlands). This battle happened in Oct 1797!
I can’t find birth or death records for him for these dates on SP.
I have him marrying Marion (Mary) Cleland on 25/11/1773 at Pettinain, Lanarkshire. They had 11 children together.
I have found a Robert Turner b 12 Aug 1773 in Lanarkshire. From that his parents would be Archibald Turner and Margaret Wallace.
Any ideas or assistance would be much appreciated. It’s another brick wall for me just now.

I am confused by what you say.

If he was married in 1773, he cannot also have been born in 1773.

What were the names of his children, in order of birth, and who were the parents of Marion/Mary Cleland?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Oops, sorry, a typo! It should read 1733.

The children are:
Agnes 1773-1774
James 1777-1777
Christian 1779-1850
Robert 1780-1849
Janet 1783-1871
Marion 1785-
William 1786-
Margaret 1788-
Mary 1791-
Joseph 1792-1861
Elizabeth 1795-1875.

Marion/Mary Cleland’s parents are Thomas Cleland (1728-?) and Anna Lowdoun (1730-?)

Sorry for confusing things

The only birth I see for Mary n Scotland on SP in that year is below, where did your record come from?

CLELAND   MARY   GEORGE CLELAND/KATHARIN SMITH    06/05/1750   Eastwood

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Given the names of his children, the Robert Turner born 1738 in Heriot to parents James Turner and Christian Crombie might be worth considering.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Although about 25 miles from Pettain, I would have thought this was a better match for Robert but more research will be required.

ROBERT TURNER  - JAMES TURNER/CHRISTIAN CROMBIE    29/10/1738   Heriot
