I am wondering which branch of the army this uniform relates to. Probably WW1 or possibly Boer War.

Looks like the Territorial 5th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. The uniform differs from the regular battalions of the Seaforth Highlanders:

He's wearing the 1902 pattern uniform so after that date.
