Diary > Friday 25th September
« on: Friday 25 September 20 23:43 BST (UK) »
Got up early today so that I'd have some chance of looking like I was awake for the online art class and to be sure I was ready for my friend arriving beforehand. I'd actually set an alarm (hated things! ) but woke before it. I'd had difficulty getting to sleep last night as today was going to be another new experience for me, the first time I was spending time with someone in my house.

It was another wet day and really windy, I had the central heating on before my friend arrived. Made her a cup of coffee and our class started, a demonstration this week. The teacher muted us all while she did the demo which was a good thing as it prevented the camera going to people who were making comments. My friend and I were able to chat amongst ourselves which was good.

The two hours soon passed, we had another drink and a chat then my friend left. It was still showery and dull. After I'd had lunch the sun came out so I went out. I got onto the field and was nearly blown off my feet. Didn't think it was a good idea to go in the woods in a gale so just did a circuit of the field and back home, I was absolutely gasping.

Did some bits on the laptop but am having problems charging it and even plugging it in. Put the washer on, had to give up and hang it to dry indoors. At 5pm the Met Office app said it was light cloud with a bit of sunshine,  in actual fact the rain was hammering down.

Did my own version of a recipe for tea  - cod fillet, tomatoes, oregano, new potatoes, lemon wedges and olive oil in a dish, cooked in the oven, was good.

This evening I read on my local newspaper app that council leaders in this area have appealed to people not to visit each other in their homes, they are saying that more than 80% of new infections have been spread within households. In my specific area the deputy leader of the council has said that most of the increase has been due to people visiting and socialising with each other. How could they possibly know that? She has asked us to please consider not mixing with other households. I'm FURIOUS!  She can get stuffed!  Today was the first time I've had anyone inside my house for a visit since early March, we took all the necessary precautions as we have done for the last six months, WE ARE NOT TO BLAME!! How on earth does the stupid woman think that those of us who live alone can continue like that? We're not the ones going out partying with hordes of people and bringing the virus to those we visit. Livid doesn't adequately describe how I feel.  >:( >:( >:(

Roobarb- I can empathise with you entirely... you’ve been so good overall these months that I’m sure you don’t need to worry over one friend visiting you at home... as you say it’s all the youngsters partying and then continuing once they leave pubs etc.... makes you want to get hold of them all and just line them up and give them a good lecture.... don’t they have parents and grandparents who they could be passing itinerary too...
Glad to hear you enjoyed your art demo and I’m sure in the following weeks you’ll get more from it with your friend...
I read tonight that Mayor of London is considering putting the capitol under local lockdown restricting people from leaving their homes..... that would put paid to seeing the family ....

My day

Very little to report today...
Added to my C n C shop on Monday....
Had a good vacuum and tidy up every where....
Weather chilly, windy and fairly miserable...
Got on with sewing my Scrubs...
Pictures on F B of first 🌈 scrubs delivered to Papwoth Hospital.... hoping mine will be done in a couple of days time...
Had a zoom with two sets of friends .... all as fed up as we are but nice to see them..
Dinner was out of the freezer tonight can’t do cordon blue cooking every night Roobarb!..
Watched tv... another day passes...

Maybe others have been more interesting...

It is SO difficult about socialising isn't it?
I don't touch other people, and try to distance to avoid inadvertent "spray".
Also try not to use any toilet facility.
One friend with windows open and precautions taken, probably isn't going to cause a problem.
But of course that does depend on who that one friend sees during the other 6 1/2 days.
We certainly can not remain in isolation for ever, and must have some contact at times.

Windy with intermittent sunshine.
Had a walk along Babbacombe Downs which was jolly cold. Very glad I was wearing my winter padded body warmer and a scarf.  Currently 4 cruise liners at anchor.
H made a start on garage door. He has decided it is the wrong colour undercoat, and we need another tin of paint.  :-X
Someone came to quote for a replacement hall carpet. No mask.
Watched a Vera on TV.
Not the stuff of Pepys I am afraid. :P

Roobarb, like Caroline, I empathise with you over this situation.  It must be very annoying to feel that you are being prohibited from having this friend over.   Surely, just having the occasional companionship of one friend shouldn't be too much to ask, after all this time.  I think they should be more clamping down on people who are partying.
I was on the bus the other day and overheard a conversation that the bus driver was having with a passenger.  Passenger was sitting at the front and the driver was in his cab as they conversed back and forth.  The driver  sounded frustrated about this ongoing situation as I heard him say .. "I'm allowed to drive a busload of people around every day and yet I can't see my son!"   The woman said that in her household they are socially distancing by each eating on their own at the table at different times.  The driver said "To pot with that!"
I have read your recent comments about people volunteering to be infected with the virus in order to test a new vaccine.  How altruistic is that!  I would imagine they would have to be very fit and healthy and they will get paid a lot for this.  However, I am amazed too that anyone would do this.  Yes, what would we do without them.

Caroline, I continue to be totally in awe of how much you have worked to help others with your sewing.  The rainbow scrubs sound lovely - I think these will feel quite uplifting to wear and to see.  A rainbow design sounds so cheerful and will be a visible message of hope.

Mowsehowse, I am now trying too not to use public toilets after I have read there can be risk in this.  Occasionally, I have though.  I have seen notices up stating that toilets are available at your 'own risk' and that you should put the seat lid down before flushing so that there isn't circulation up into the air.

Hope you enjoyed your blustery walk yesterday and also hope the quote isn't too expensive.  Fancy that person showing up at your house without a mask!

I haven't read Pepys, so I can't compare.  Perhaps he might just be over-rated.  ;D :P

My day yesterday:

Grey sky initially (although the sun came out for a spell later on) and very blustery.  It really feels like Autumn has kicked in as it is quite cold and leaves are peppering the lawns and skittering around the street in the wind.  In the morning I checked emails and went on Rootschat.  I paid some bills.  I also went for a walk through a local cemetery and took some more photos for Find A Grave and then called at the supermarket near to the cemetery for some essentials.  At the supermarket, the breast screening unit which has been there for many years has now gone.   (My much older, and now deceased sister had once asked them why this was in the car park of a supermarket and they explained that women tend to view this as more low key and less daunting than having to visit a hospital and that they will be more likely to attend appointments in this everyday environment.)
I wonder if this will now mean that I will now have to go to a hospital for my screening check when it is due again next year?  Or will the screening be put on hold and postponed as my dental appointments have been?
In the afternoon, I did a bit of pottering on jobs around the house and also got the garden recycling bin topped up a bit ready to be put out for collection on Saturday.  It then started to rain.  I did a little more work on removing paper templates from my quilt - I am just doing a little bit here and there so it feels like this is taking forever.  Home pizza for tea followed by a couple of cups of tea.  I was going to have a yoghurt for dessert but then forgot to have it.  Had a quiet evening as well before bed.  Added a few more photos on Find A Grave (have managed to 'fulfill' one person's photo request today) and did some reading.

Re toilets:
It rather spooked me that live Covid19 virus has been found in the sewers, and when you think about the added precautions we all take when any of the family have D&V, it seems likely that public toilets should be an area for taking extra care. Though they can't always be avoided of course.
I am in the habit at home of putting the lid down before flushing. I saw an experiment on TV once which showed how far the flush air circulation travels, and we keep out toothbrushes on the hand basin!!

RTL - I tend to agree with the bus driver in his comments ....of course he’s probably behind a screen on the bus whereas with his son he wouldn’t be... non the less it’s daft! Like teachers with all those children and yet not able to see family... it’s no wonder people just give up... but then the lines have to be drawn somewhere I suppose and I certainly wouldn’t want to be the one making those decisions!!
Thank you for your kind comments...I love doing it and it helps me to keep sane and not loose too many scrabble games 😂😂... I wish I could post on here the finished 🌈 scrubs so you can all see how uplifting the colours look... we know the staff at Papworth we’re delighted with them...

I too have heard about putting lids of toilet seats down when flushing... quite staggering how far droplets can go... fortunately none of our looks are near wash basins and tooth brushes have covers on anyway .... I’ve managed to train my OH never to leave the lid up at all ...hate to walk into a bathroom and see lids up...we all have our little bet noirs!

Hope you both have a lovely day... sunshine here so far...
