His obituary in the Exeter Flying Post 22 Feb 1855 reads: "February 6 at Bideford, Mr Clendinnen, a retired Wesleyan minister, aged 84".
North Devon Journal 15 Feb 1855: "6th instant, at Bideford, in the 85th year of his age, the Rev. John Clendinnen. He discharged the duties of the Christian ministry, in connection with the Wesleyan body, most faithfully and acceptably, for more than half a century".
