Tracing changed house names

Hello all.

Could someone point me in the right direction where to look for property that has changed names? I'm trying to trace the Census records of a Victorian property but I suspect the property gained it's current name in the 60's.... so I'm stuck with a starting point. I have no names to help!

If you know the road or street that the property is on you can do an address search just for the street in the censuses, and the 1939 register, on Findmypast, then see if you can locate it.

I was going to make the same suggestion as Stan.  Have you googled the name of the property to see what pops up?

It’s on a main road - one that’s name has also changed over the years! 

I was hoping a registry might exist where you could type in property name now and it would tell you what it used be called! Wishful thinking eh?!

Yes, I Googled in hope of a lead but nothing - nothing at all!! I do know the name of the family living there since the 1960’s but nothing before that!

I was wondering, as it’s a rural home, if trying to find old maps might help? Again though, hard to know where to start.

Okay, so how about focusing on the road name and seeing how far back its current name goes?  Do you have a place/county for the road name?

You can change the map series - some maps show more detail than others. Some older properties have names marked on maps.

I agree with all the above ideas and would have done exactly as Stan suggests to start off such a search but I remember trying to find a property in rural Sussex a while back and I used a nearby pub that I knew hadn't changed its name for three hundred odd years to orientate myself on the census and then went from there.

As Liz says, once you have found it on a map, you can perhaps see if there is a pub/inn nearby to act as a datum point; you can follow the enumerator's route - this is on the first page of any census piece on Ancestry.

When you say Victorian, that's a long period! When was the house built?
