Spring Trade
« on: Sunday 27 September 20 13:27 BST (UK) »
I have a relative who gives his occupation in 1911 as Labourer in the spring trade. He is living in Kimberworth. Can anyone explain to be what 'spring trade' is or was ?

Thank you,

Heatha

Could it have been metal springs?
Kimberworth page of 1911 White's Directory can be downloaded from Kimberworth & Rotherham History blog. https://kandrhistory.home.blog/blog/kimberworth/

Thank you - that is quite probably what it is. Obvious when I think about it as his on was a wagon builder so probably springs for wagons. There is a wagon builder (Walter Mills) in the directory so they probably both worked for him or accompanying trades.

Has the enumerator entered an occupation code against the entry in Column 10 or is Column 11 left blank?

It says 602 and then something else so crossed out that I cannot read it. Is there a  list of trades corresponding to the codes which is available online ?

The code for his son looks like 692 (wagon builder).

I had found the 1911 Census after posting - as you say, it reads "602"

FindMyPast has the list. "Puddling furnaces; Iron and Steel Rolling Mills"
