Baptism in Spott
« on: Sunday 27 September 20 17:06 BST (UK) »
Please can someone help with this baptism record? The problem is with the 5th word, beginning with B, which may be where the family lived. Maybe a Scots dialect word, which someone will recognise?

1880s map but can't see anything likely. Looks like Binns to me....writer does not seem to dot their 'i's.

Thanks, that seems the most likely answer. It is a very odd "r", but it is rather a scrawl altogether! I expect father was an ag lab, or Scottish equivalent at the steading. Son James was a shepherd later.

Also son James www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/58181327e93790ec8bae93a2/james-white-baptism-east-lothian-spott-1808-07-17?locale=en

Can't see the 1800 christening on Freereg. Hopefully other entries help to confirm place name.

Monica

Added: Is the clip reading 1808 or 1800? Is this James's OPR entry that you have included above?

That is the parish register on Scotland's People. Some of the entries on the same page are more obviously 1808, but they are also a bit muddled. 1808 fits better with his census entries.
I have never got into the habit of using Freereg, though I have used FreeBMD for years - I must remember it.

SP do have James indexed for 1808, which would be where you sourced the image I would think:

James WHITE
PETER WHITE/MARGARET WILSON
17/07/1808
720/20 141
Spott

They only have him and sister, indexed Isbald, showing for Peter and wife Margaret in Spott.
