Good evening,
Family legend has it that great grandmother's sister ? McDermott went to Australia, (either from New Zealand or County Clare, Ireland), and married ? Heneberry - a relation of Fred Heneberry the boxer.

As great grandmother married in New Zealand in 1866 I imagine her sister's marriage would be in the 1860's or 1870's.

I do not know in which state this marriage took place.

Do you have any hints for looking, other than slowly trawling through each state's records?

Thank you
Jean Price
Rangiora, New Zealand

Frederick Joseph HENNEBERRY, the boxer, was born 1911 in Port Pirie SA and died in NSW in 1997.

Frederick Joseph HENNEBERRY, the boxer, was born 1911 in Port Pirie SA and died in NSW in 1997.

His folks were: Michael Francis HENNEBERRY and Mary Catherine SLY

Michael’s funeral notice, 1st column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article237885598
Obit, 1st column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article166494610

Mary’s death notice, 2nd column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18129209

Siblings of Frederick: Francis, William, Alfred, Edward and Vincent.

Michael Francis was born 1863. So, based on the dates given by the OP, we would be looking at a connection to Michael’s folks, maybe, who could have been a similar age to the grandmother’s sister. I can’t find Michael’s VIC birth reg to get folk’s names and NSWBDM is currently offline.

There is what appears to be quite a good tree on Ancestry for the Fred family, but there are no McDermotts or Matthews on it.
