Missionary to South Africa
« on: Monday 28 September 20 16:48 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find my grandmother on a sailing to South Africa in 1902 or 1903.
We know she was on the census in Wales in 1901 & she married in South Africa in 1904.
Her name was Susannah (or Susie) Roberts. DOB 1881.
Apparently she was a missionary, but don't know how true this is.
I have been unable to find her on any passenger lists.
I've found her on the return to UK in 1907.
Can anyone help please?

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Could the below be your lady?

A Miss S Roberts age 21, left Southampton on 14th March 1903 on the Braemar Castle.  Destination Durban South Africa.

Ship's official number is 108381 and the shipping line is the Union-Castle Line.  The ship master's name was D. Wallace.

I couldn't seem to find her on the actual image, but there appeared to be quite a number of pages so I may have missed it.

Did she marry a Patrick Doyle?  There is a marriage record on Family Search between Patrick Doyle and Susanna Roberts on 2nd August 1904 at Ermelo.

The original image gives a birth place which is hard to read.  I can make out North Wales England! but the actual place is much harder.  The first letter looks the same as that written for Wales so presumably somewhere beginning with W.

You may know what her birthplace is anyway.

Think S Roberts on the page is 16 and is part of a family group with an H Roberts who is 19 and J Roberts who is 21.

It could well be a mistake on the transcriber's part.

The annoying thing now about the travel records on FindMyPast is that they no longer show if any others are travelling with that person. They used to do that but seem to have stopped it.

If the transcriber has it wrong, then that Susannah is too young, assuming I have found the correct South African marriage for the poster's Susannah.
