Confirm this occupation please
« on: Wednesday 30 September 20 07:58 BST (UK) »
The 1841 census for Lidlington village is attached.  The top name is William Wright and I know he was a schoolmaster.  The faintly written word in the census looks to be that word.  Next is his wife, Martha, and then their son, William, who was also a schoolmaster (on his 1842 marriage certificate) but the word doesn't look the same as for his father.  I think it could be 'teacher'  ??

All the names below seem to be schoolchildren/pupils and written down as scholars?

Thank you!

Could it be 'School  Do'.  Do being ditto.   The surname has also been transcribed as 'Do'

It’s the same for the 15 year old Evan Davies, under the son.

Yes I can see the 'Do' and understand that to mean ditto.  But, William (the son) is 25 years old and Evan and the others listed are 15 years old.  William, the son, could be working as a schoolmaster/teacher but Evan and the others can't and it seems unlikely William, the son, is a scholar.

I think this may be another case of enumerator error and I'll have to apply logic and what I know from later information/census.

Consider that at this time it was a system of pupil-teacher used for training teachers. It also provided free staff.

I don't think that it says School 'Do' after Evan.  It looks as though it starts with an A, could it be short for Assistant.  He and the others are a separate household to the Wright family

Yes, I could see that the Wrights were a household of three and then another household starting with Evan Davies but I was assuming that the Wrights were counting their home and Evan Davies etc. were the school counting as another 'household'.
