William O'Neil and Mary Blanchfield, Hampshire, Massachusetts
« on: Thursday 01 October 20 17:15 BST (UK) »
William O'Neil and wife Mary Blanchfield lived in Hampshire, Massachusetts
Here is Mary and four children in 1870
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7163/images/4269721_00141?pId=28497156 living with Marys mother Mary Blanchfield. William is not registered so he must have already died by 1870?

ON the 1880 census it says Mary emigrated 1868, so this kind of matches up with the birth of the forth children Richard in Massachusetts.

I would like to find Williams death or more info, if any, on him.

I have not found any baptisms for the first two children in Ireland nor have I found a marriage for them there - which is very annoying!

Thank you

I also came across this grave which may or may not be Mary Blanchfield (the mother)

Not sure.

Just a note to say that only people with an ancestry subscription would see your links to the
census. Best to use family search to link to, then everyone can see them.

Presume William died between 1867/8 when Richard was born and the 1870 census
(1st June 1870)

The surname prove to be awkward - many variations to check  :-\

The Oniel family were with Mary Blanchfield in 1870 census Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts.

Blanchfield Mary 67 born Canada.
Richard Comeford   18
Bridget Conolly   30
Mary O'neal   50
Ellen O'neal   16
Margaret O'neal   14
Thomas O'neal   11
Richard O'neal   3

Massachusetts was the first state to initiate state wide registration of vital records beginning in 1841.
If the death was recorded it might be found in Massachusetts State Vital Records, 1841-1920 on familysearch.

Possible for the daughter Margaret J O Neil - 1860 Ireland - married aged 23 years 5 April 1883 Williamsburg Massachusetts.  ???

Father William O'neill  -  Mother Mary B O'neil - Spouse Thomas H Boss

If Margaret proves to belong to the correct family - here is her obituary

Yes, the daughter Margaret married into the Boss family. I have her. Thanks

I'll give that record set on familysearch a look now.

Some thoughts…

1870 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MD3C-H7X

1880 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MH6G-BNN

The 1880 census didn't ask nor does it give year of immigration. In the 1870 census the age for Richard looks like 3 (1867) to me.

William could have died before they immigrated? Or well before 1867? There is quite an age difference between son Richard and the other children. Was William really Richard's father? This clipping suggest he may not have been? Was Richard named after this Richard Croik?

Hampshire Gazette
Northampton, Massachusetts
June 11, 1867

In the case of Mary O'Neil vs. Richard Croik(?sp)
which was a complaint for bastardy, the jury
found the defendant guilty.

Thats quite a find there.
So, its probable that the husband William died in Ireland by the looks of it then.
Thanks for that

As for the immigration year I must of got it off another census or something. Going by that article they probably emigrated 1865/66.

siblings of Mary (Blanchfield) O'Neil in the Northhampton area:

ancestry suggests the marriage of Timothy Blanchfield and Mary Walsh, 26 July 1818 in Drangan, Tipperary. the image and transcription give their townlands.

ancestry suggests the death of Timothy Blanchfield, age 80, in Carrick-On-Suir, Tipperary, in 1866.
https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?dbid=2534&h=680819&indiv=try&o_vc=Record:OtherRecord&rhSource=2101

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ says it was the 1st quarter of that year and gives the information for ordering a copy.

Don't jump to conclusions that this is the right couple and death. There might have been more than one couple with those names in Ireland in that timeframe, and not all the parish registers are online. But if you can find a few of the baptisms for Timothy and Mary's children that match the people in Northhampton, then you can be pretty sure.

Edited. Correction:
There is no double "h" in the middle of Northampton, Mass. It will affect your searches, at least at ancestry.
