Finding ancestor from unknown London parish
« on: Thursday 01 October 20 21:28 BST (UK) »
Good evening everyone

I need some help finding my ancestor Thomas Marsh. He was born around 1776 in London, however the census only says "London, parish NK (not known)". He moved to Wellington in Somerset, where he worked as a saddler and married Mary Hodder in 1803 in Honiton. There's no further indication as to his family or birth in the marriage record or census. In the marriage he is listed as "sojourner". The only other thing I noticed was that in the 1841 census there is a John Morrish living with the family. Potentially some connection to Marsh?

Thomas died in 1857.

1841 census - Wellington Somerset: HO107/950 Book 5; Folio 16/p 24

1851 census: HO107/1921/386 p36

Many thanks

Hi there,

Yes, Sarah and Richard are my ancestors.  :)

A couple more bits of info. While the census gives a birth date of 1776 for Thomas, his death certificate gives an age of 88, so 1769.

The 1851 census has Sarah and Elizabeth Marsh as grandaughters of Thomas, but I can't find a record of birth for them and I also don't have a son for Thomas who could be their father (unless they were illegitimate).

Best wishes
Samuel

Check the granddaughter Elizabeth’s birth on the gro birth index, it will give a mother’s maiden name then you can check for a marriage.

Unfortunately, here is another problem. I can't find Elizabeth on the gro either! Have checked from 1844-1846 and there's no Elizabeth Marsh born in Wellington or the surrounding area

No, I couldn’t see a baptism either.

There is one for a Sarah Marsh in  Wellington 1835 ... 2 years earlier than expected. Parents are Charles Marsh, a mason and wife Elizabeth.  You might want to keep a note of that just in case, Ancestry has the Somerset parish record images, FindMyPast has transcripts only

Ah! Excellent! Just looked into this and Charles is definitely a relation. Born in 1804 in Honiton, one year after Thomas and Mary's marriage there.
