The only connection to Canada in my family that I know of is grandma b 1903 nee STEVENSON was given a gold nugget by a great uncle who mined for gold there  .so I'd have to look for which  uncle  STEVENSON or MCKAY went there .+ There are an awful lot of uncles

Had a message from a mcmartin match .
To confuse things Charles and Betty had cousins also called Charles and Betty.
thru Silas McMartin s brother Robert
So may need to go back to drawing board to unravel them

Am informed most of our suppositions are correct :

Here are some corrections from a match ( with living peoples names deleted by me)
"My understanding is : VL is related through one of my grandfather McMartin's brothers, Harold or Raymond.
m ismy sister and  Jr is my brother.

. So JLs grandfather may be related via my grandfathers brothers, Harold or Raymond. They lived for a time in the Chicago area. Just guessing.

M is my sister.
ms FInkel is my niece, the daughter of another sister.

I cant modify any of answers that are  older but hope these corrections.cover it

 More information from mcmartin s

There were a lot of McMartins in Escanaba Michigan in the 1800s and early 1900s.
Methodists, working the Chicago Northwestern Railroad , etc.

Based on the DNA evidence, I think JL descends from grandfather Silas' brother, Harold or Raymond.
Or their father Silas Sr's brothers, Malcolm, Robert or Loftis McMartin.

Thats her opinion

I favour first option because if JLs grandfather was b 1945
Shes obviously at least two generations younger than most of the other testees

This post may only.be interesting to McMartins but I also think the dna steps could be useful to others with gaps in their trees at grandparent/ great grandparent level

Met 3 sisters on zoom and were going to zoom again with photos of their ancestors and cousins
Hopefully JL the adoptee who started this search will join us

For me it has been lovely to have this challenge
Read a book about life from 1930 near Canadian border
and meet such interesting people who have encouraged me in performance storytelling
& Motivated me to run workshops or tutorials across world on understanding DNA results and some extra tricks to find matches and on using old photos to look for facial similarity & fashion.etv to identify people
