1939 England and Wales Register Correction Surname

Hi everyone.

I just wanted to double check something. In the 1939 England and Wales Register someone in the household has had their surname crossed out in green ink; above it the surname has been changed. I believe this is because some time after the record was taken the individual got married.

In the margin in the same green ink it reads ‘cr283. OX 20.5.69.’ I assuming this means correction made, Oxford and then the date of the correction.

Can someone please confirm that this is true?

A date on the 1939 usually means that additional information has been received.  For a female that usually means a marriage, especially if the name has been crossed out and another one added. 

You could check by having a look at marriages on freebmd using the birth and new names and the year.

I just double checked my mother and she has the name change and the date is probably when the NHS were notified of the name change.

The month and year of her marriage are correct but not the actual date.

THe 1939 National Register was later used by the NHS as their Central Register.
This continued until the 1990s.

So any changes up until the 1990s are reflected in the "1939" Register

Thank you for your reply. So do you believe that in my case that would signify a marriage in 1969 in Oxfordshire? So that would be the reason for the NHS being provided with the change of surname.

I only ask as the individual I am researching was born in 1909.

I have actually been unable to find any information on the marriage, I have access to ancestry and Find My Past. I am happy to provide more information here or create another post in the correct sub section if necessary, just let me know.

You are absolutely correct. I have just searched Find My Past for the Individual I am researching  using 'Oxfordshire' '1969' in marriages and I have found her! The record was a little evasive as the middle name was shortened from 'Lucy' to 'L' which wasn't helpful. Thankfully I was able to narrow it down following our discussion regarding confirmation of the 1969 correction.
