who was the Administrator - the only white man - governing the Mankoya District (now Kaoma in Zambia).  To get there took three weeks on a barge up the Zambesi to Mongu from the railway in Livingstone.  From there was a 140 mile walk along footpaths through the bush, on sandy soil - so no wheels !; everything was transported on the heads of porters.
