Please help me decipher this gaol record Hannah and Alicia McDonald 1836
« on: Sunday 04 October 20 06:51 BST (UK) »
Hi
Just looking to decipher this gaol record from 1836. Alicia and Hannah were sentenced together for being in possession of stolen goods. Alicia was given 12 months at Maryborough Gaol, Laois, Ireland (now called Portloaise I think) with hard labour 1 day a week solitary confinement (I dont know if this means was hard labour every day and 1 day a week solitary or hard labour 1 day a week and solitary confinement the rest?). Hannah was given 7 years transportation to NSW where she married William Beer had a few kids, and then he died and she married again and had 1 more. She died as Hannah Robinson in 1883. Quite a few articles on her in NSW as she was assaulted by both husbands it seems..

Just trying to decipher the name of the person who committed them and also the person and maybe trial name?

For me, it looks like:

By whom committed: Thomas Mofse Esq (esquire)

When and before whom tried: John Perkles Esq (esquire) Apt (appointed or appointment) Banister (I dont know what this is?)

Boris Sessions? or Bonis Delivers? I can see this second word which I think is sessions on the document alot but not sure I know they have assizes for English courts? Any information on Ireland courts in 1836 would be appreciated :)

Its the second row from the top.

Thanks
Stephanie.

Thomas Mosse Esq(uire) - it's a long-s.

See:    http://www.rootschat.com/links/01px8/

It is Borris Sessions.  Borris is a small village north of Portlaoise.

I would expect these are Petty Sessions but don't have time to check.

The other man is an Ass(istan)t - long-s again.  The second word looks like it might be Barrister.

I don't have time to do more.

I would expect these are Petty Sessions but don't have time to check.

The sentences seem very harsh for Petty Sessions.  You'll need to check further.  The other type of Sessions are Quarter Sessions.

I think the name is Peebles rather than Perkles.
