Rootschat's 'Stay Safe' board is mimicking social media
« on: Sunday 04 October 20 16:50 BST (UK) »
I know its a good thing to have a discussion about certain aspects of covid, lockdown etc as well as an equally healthy difference of viewpoints.

However, I feel that its gone too far now and has started to mimic the worst kind of tweets etc on social media platforms. Its getting nastier and nastier. I'm not on social media (it doesn't interest me) but I've read some of the reports of just how cruel the postings can be.

There was recently a thread where contributors positively salivated at the prospect of Trump not surviving his covid diagnosis. Thankfully, it was locked by the people who run this site but not before it had got quite unedifying. He may not be everyone's cup of tea (certainly not mine) but he's a human being, after all.

Now, again, we have certain people rejoicing at the draconian measures handed out to people on the IoM. Lock 'em up, throw away the key, oh and by the way, don't feed them more than the absolute minimum. Really?

I admit I'm no saint in this respect but I do try to exercise some degree of humanity. It isn't enough to say that this is for the greater good because, if we have to resort to such thoughts and expressions, we are already lost.

HELP!!!

I couldn't agree with you more, At one stage there was 8 topics on the state of the pandemic in a very short space, it drives down the interesting topics as they get lost. I'm not a fan of social media either, this site is my social media and I would like it to stay that way.
Whilst I appreciate people's concern over the situation and also the suffering experienced by many, I come on here for research and light entertainment and not to read what is already being pushed down our throats, hour by hour, day by day on the T.V. and radio also the newspapers. It's information that we can all get if and when we want it. I don't want to come on the site to see news updates or headlines that are already out there!
It's here, it's hard and it will continue that way for some time to come and probably will only disappear when a vaccine becomes available. I don't read any of the Covid lead posts as I am an optimist and believe that a positive attitude helps in what is an otherwise thoroughly depressing state of affairs.

"but he's a human being, after all"

Just barely.  Do you remember when he mocked the disabled man on national television?  When he jeered at John McCain who was dying of brain cancer?  When he sneered at Clinton for having pneumonia?

Rumours on the IoM that 2 of the jailed welders have Covid, and subsequently the prison is locked down?
I stress that these are just rumours, and I haven't managed to find a definitive news article, but the island is Covid-free, and ALL people coming/returning simply MUST follow the Government advice.
It's the only way to stay Covid-free.

P.S. They are being fed ;D

I suppose you mean postings where people are called "hysterical" for asking questions about the revised guidance or "smug and self-righteous" when acting in the public good.

Rootschat is social media. It is no different from any one of the 10,000 specialist groups on Facebook. I am an Admin/Mod on 4 different private ones. Each has a qualification that must be met before joining.

Here the only qualification is an interest in family history. But as for everything else, we are the same - we squabble, we agree, we disagree, we make friends, we fall out with people, we go out of our way to help those who need it.

I think that this board is needed as a sort of pressure release valve. We can vent here, then draw breath, then carry on.

I would be sad to see it go.

I mostly steer clear, but would not like to see it go.

Maybe we should all look back a few years and stick to Berlin Bobs advice, adress your reply to the original poster.

I would be gutted to see it go, I contribute mainly to the diary threads and have found them to be a massive support in these times.

Treetotal, I agree that it's not nice to continually read about the pandemic but you don't actually have to do so. The name of the board speaks for itself so you can quite easily avoid it.

I can't actually see any suggestion in the original post that it should go.  Jill was simply giving her view on some of the comments made in various postings. But if the Board did go there's no reason at all why the Diary threads couldn't continue on the ToT Board  :)
