'Royal Air Force Alfred Arthur Snook. Redfield, Bristol
« on: Sunday 04 October 20 17:00 BST (UK) »
Hi, is there anyone who can help me. I own a WWII crew photo. The photo shows the fallen RAF man Alfred Arthur Snook. He is buried in Paris (Poix de Picardie). He came from Redfield (Bristol). I would like to learn more about the life of this soldier. I already know how and where he died. However, I would like to know a little more about his daily life. Anyone who can help me? Maybe a local history club in Redfield? Anyway, thank you for your help.

To start the ball rolling:

The CWGC website has his death 2 May 1944 aged 22.  The only matching birth on FreeBMD is:
SNOOK Alfred A, Dec qtr 1921 Woolwich vol 1d p2041, mmn LEE
There are no other SNOOK/LEE births in Woolwich, so either Alfred was an only child or the family moved to another district.

There is a marriage:
Mar qtr 1921 Woolwich vol 1d p2146 SNOOK Alfred E to LEE Elizabeth M
who may be his parents.

The 1939 Register (on paysites) could provide more information.

Philip

If you do not already have a copy of his service record, you can apply to the RAF's 3rd Party Disclosure Team. This website gives all the details on how to apply: https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records

You could look at the Operations Record Books for No. 218 Squadron for a day by day summary of events on the squadron: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2503992. These are currently free to download with a website registration for a limited time.
Most of my family tree covers the Highlands of Scotland, London, Hertfordshire and the Midlands of England. I work as a researcher in a military archive.

My uncle is also buried in the churchyard at Poix de Picardie; it is 28 km south-west of Amiens not in Paris.

There is another Snook/Lee birth;  1925  in Colchester;  could be related.  :-\
