George Gibbs b.Hungerford lived in Marlborough
« on: Monday 05 October 20 14:37 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,
I have been researching the Gibbs line for a number of years, however I have been stuck for a while.

My 4x Great grandfather was George Gibbs b. Hungerford in 1809.

I have found his details on the  1841,1851,1861,1871,1881 census'. He lived with his family at 42 High street Marlborough(I have visited the property as it is still there). He is listed on the census' and his children’s wedding certificates as being a Tailor.

Unfortunately I have been unable to find any birth record for George, or any means of finding out what his parents names are which is stopping me from furthering my research.

I have contacted the various Tailor guilds but they were unable to find any record of him.

I have found a George Gibbs born in Lambourne which is very close to Hungerford, however this George was born in 1816. A friend who is a researcher suggested maybe it could be this George and he lied about his age (6 years different) otherwise Mary wouldn't have been interested in him and married him. It seems probable, however there is no concrete evidence and its just a speculation that doesn't sit 100% with me.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas?

I appreciate other peoples brick walls are not always very interesting, however I'd appreciate any ideas!

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to rootschat.

A quick thought is that the marriage in hungerford was Dec. 1832, I would think that a 17 year old would find it difficult to appear as a 23 year old.

I cannot find a likely baptism but places of birth on the census are not always reliable, people put the place they remember as a child, which may not be where they are born.

Others more expert than me may be able to help.

The Georgie Gibbs born in wroughton near Swindon is still there in 1841, so not yours, the Avebury one is in Avebury in 1851 so also not yours, I searched for births 1808-1812 in England, these two were geographically the nearest.

Interesting.! I don't think I had picked up on this. That gives me something to work with if she is Georges' cousin....

Thank you...good spot.!

Hmm I wonder who she was

It's interesting as if his cousin was born in Barnes surrey..that means that Georges uncle/aunty (i think its aunty in this case) could have been born there, so maybe his parents were from there. hmm. Lots to look at, bed time now ..

There is also a William Gibbs bc.1807 Hungerford who is also a tailor and there is no baptism for him either.  (He is not the William bp.1807, son of John and Ann, who died 1808). He married a Mary Smith 22/10/1832 Hungerford.

I would suggest that perhaps, in view of their occupations, ages, and given place of birth, that William and George could be brothers.

However, even if that were so, neither of their baptisms is available online so it is possible they were both baptised in a non-conformist church whose records are not online.

Cathrine Gibbs was one of George's daughters, interesting.

As cathrine was living with Elizabeth in Bath (she moved back to Marlborough later) it seems probable that Elizabeth was a cousin on the Gibbs side. As she didn't marry that meant her Mother was a Gibbs and her father a Smith. So Georges father had a sister.

Finding Elizabeth's parents could proove usful to find out where her mother was born (Georges auntie) This mornings job..
