What does this say on the baptism record?

Towards the bottom: Thomas (unreadable) son of Joseph and Sarah Digby . Looks like posthumous.

Looks like the same word in brackets further up for Suckling Anne (?????) Dr of William and Anne.

What is the word pls? If it's posthumous does this mean the baptism was done after the child died in childbirth?

Am still learning and this is new to me.

It's from Essex church records circa 1764 by the way.

It is posthumous, and means that the father died before the child was born. Look back over the previous few months and you'll probably find the burial.

It means the father was dead when the child was born.
