Very clever yes that fits William nicely.  not long off the boat and died, what a shame.

They had a son born on the journey over to NZ.  One month old William John.  Where would his birth be recorded?

Yes I did wonder about the name Greason, it did show on my marriage c.d.

Thank you very much

In my case my ggrandparents had a death of a daughter and a birth of a son, on the way out from Scotland,  in the 1860's, the death and birth were recorded at the nearest port, which was Melbourne.

Thanks you.
Looks like they had three sons in the short period of arriving and William's death.
Alexander was the one born on the way here, then William John, and then George Andrew who I think may of been on the way when William drowned.

Could it of been possible that Margaret changed the name of her son Alexander to William John, once arriving to NZ?
As it states Alexander was born coming to NZ in 1859.  However the family settled in Rangiroa and the only strong leads are William John Gracey born 1859, and a brother George Andrew born 1861 (presume Margaret was pregnant at time of her husbands death)

George Andrew Gracey states all family names including his half sibling (Smith) in his probate.

The only Alexander Gracey (Gracie) marriage seems to be to a  to a Francis Elliss in 1887.  They seems to live in the North Island.
