In the "History of Templeland Cottage" - Dalry Burns Club is the following:
"In 1835 name changed from Orr's Academy to "Templand" or "Templeland" cottage. Parish Records state that Templeland cottage and offices were owned by a Mr John Hunter, a local baker. He lived at "Rosebank" with his wife Jean Hunter, their 7 children and a servant. John Hunter ran a bakery with his brother James somewhere in Dalry. John Hunter died in 1850."
(Pigots Ayrshire Directory 1837: BAKERS: John Blair/John & James Hunter/Hugh Reilly.)
In 1847 let by John Hunter to the Roman Catholic Church.
In 1851 Mrs Hunter moved to Templeland cottage from Rosebank according to 1853 census.
In 1858 sometime during this year Mrs Jean Hunter sold cottage & offices to Neil Dorman.
Questions:
Where did John & James Hunter have their bakery in Dalry?
What is the maiden name of Jean Hunter?
What are the names of their 7 children?
Information on James Hunter
I am seeking to determine the parents of Hugh Hunter who died in New Zealand on 17 March 1897 age 68 years. His headstone in the Hamilton West cemetery, New Zealand says "Hugh eldest son of James Hunter of Templeland, Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, died 17/3/1897 age 68".
Hugh Hunter married Ellen Moroney in Melbourne, Australia in 1853.
Hugh and Ellen Hunter had 4 children born in Australia; Jane, Hugh, Mary Ellen and William. They came to NZ in 1864 as military settlers.
A further 4 children were born in NZ; Lily, Margaret, Rebecca and John.
If his father was James it is interesting that there is a son John but not James?
Any assistance/information appreciated.
