Jeremiah Maloney (service number is 6568): Northamptonshire Regiment
« on: Wednesday 07 October 20 13:38 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to learn more about the photo attached.

I believe the photo shows Jeremiah Maloney, the step son of my great great great grandmother, Ann (nee Cox) who was married to my great great great grandfather Joseph Abram but who married William Maloney after Joseph's death.

I believe Jeremiah was born in 1872 but was married, living in Leicester aged 19 in 1891, boarding with William and Sarah Abrams and their children.

In 1901, a Jeremiah Maloney, living with Nora Maloney and her daughter is recorded in Middlesex, working as a porter. Jeremiah is recorded as Norah's son and he is now recorded as single.

A search of army records has located a Jeremiah Maloney, born 1871 (aged 31) in Northampton.  His service number is 6568, regiment is shown as the Northamptonshire regiment, attestation date 12 March 1902, attestation corps is 3rd Northamptonshire and the series reference is WO 06 - Militia Service Records 1806 - 1915.

Not sure where I go from here to learn more but if you are able to help. please let me know.

Fascinating photo. The headgear suggests an Indian army unit. The photo appears to be WW1 era, others may correct me but the tunic appears to be of the cheaper type introduced circa 1916.

Is there any clue as to where the photo was taken?

Thank you Shaun. I am trying to get further information about the photo from the relative who sent it to me. It looks as if it was taken in a studio, so if the photo was in a mount, that might have information on that. Or it may have been taken and sent as a postcard, so I have asked if there is a stamp, postmark or date. Jeremiah was I believe born in Northamptonshire and the badge on the turban is I believe from the Northamptonshire Regiment.  I understand that the Regimental Collection is held at Abington Park Museum, so I have asked them for help too. I will post back here, if I learn anything interesting.

Jeremiah was not Ann’s stepson - he was her son

William Moloney & Ann Abram married in 1869

Note surname on both records is Moloney - not Maloney

Their son Eugene Theobald Moloney was b 1877 - see family on 1881 census

Wonder if Jeremiah masqueraded as James in 1901 & 1911?   In 1891 he was a shoe finisher.

There is a James Maloney aged 29 b Grafton Underwood Northants in lodgings in Northants.  He is shown as a widower but his occ is shoe finisher.  Same profile in 1911

I have checked the 1881 & 1891 censuses but no match for a James with that profile and no marriage in Northants for a James Maloney

Hello Carole

Thank you for all the information above. I only said to my dad this morning that I wanted to go over the information again as the information about Middlesex and Norah did not seem right.  See foot of message.

Re 1901 and 1911, I have located a Jeremiah MALONEY as being a patient and an elastic weaver on the West Humberstone Municipal Ward, aged 29 born 1872. This could explain why he is not living with Ellen and his children?  It seems to be some sort of institution but I can't gather more than that. I am still drawing a blank with 1911 though. Wondering if he wasn't in the UK at this time?

Thank you once again, it is good to have someone to bounce thoughts and ideas off of.

And re the death of Jeremiah Maloney, the following information has been shared with me by Julie on Ancestry.

The Market Harbourer Advertiser of 19 December 1922 mentions a Jeremiah Maloney of Burton Latimer being drunk in Market Harborough on 28 November.

The Nottingham Journal of 9 Jan 1928 carries the attached report of his death.

I have attached the report of Jeremiah's death here.

Hi

I don't have a FindMyPast subscription so cannot open the link.  Nothing on Ancestry for him in Leics so could you post details of the 1901 piece/folio/page number so I can find him that way.

Elastic weaver??   He was a shoe finisher in 1891 and also on the 1928 newspaper report

The 1901 census for West Humberstone shows a number of entries for people in the Leics Borough Lunatic Asylum but such patients are only identified by initials - not full names - and there is nothing for JM born Northants
