Need help with a word that comes after 'his wife'
« on: Thursday 08 October 20 21:05 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I need help with the word under "Elizabeth". Could it be two words? Martha's second name? No other entry on the document had a word between his wife and was.

It reads:

Elizabeth daughter of John Johnson & Martha his wife ------- was born April 23 & baptised the 30th.

I think it is travellers.

Do you have any idea what the context is?

Martha's second name? Although it's not capitalised. Seems odd to have 'travellers' before the baptism date.

Very possibly it just meant that they were 'travellers' and the scribe couldn't put down the name of a place they were from.
Can't tell from the clip you posted, but do entries on his page usually give the place of residence or occupation of the parents of the child baptised?

Its telling you that John and Martha were travellers i.e. that is their occupation.

It might have said 'cordwainer' for example which would have come in exactly the same place in the narrative.

This is the rest of them. None of them seem to have anything.

I think they are virtually saying that are not from around here!  It is something I have seen on my traveller family.
