East Horndon 1758-9 Mixup Problem
« on: Sunday 11 October 20 11:10 BST (UK) »
Hi
Help please!
If someone has access to original East Horndon All Saints registers in 1758-59 could they do a quick look-up for me please?
The problem is that John Squiers married Jenny Turtle in 1755. She was buried 16 Feb 1759 (according to transcription) and John remarried to Ann Richardson 8 Jun 1758 (again according to transcription).

Other evidence points to it being the same man, but can anyone double-check the years please?
I know that sometimes it is hard to know where one year ends and another one starts in old registers, and I am wondering if that is what happened here?
Many thanks
Helen

Hi Sue
Many thanks for the extra info. Just one further question please, were the entries part of the same sequence or separate sequences? I was just wondering if one entry came before the other?
Helen

The burial of Jenny was after William.

Sorry, I meant by my question, the burial of Jenny and the re-marriage of John?
Were they in the same sequence, and if so, which order did they come in please?

Jenny, wife of John Squier, buried 16th February 1758/9

John their son was buried February 4th 1757

William Squier, an infant  buried January 31st, 1758, who could have been theirs.

The register looks a bit of a mess with some years being altered. Jenny's burial entry originally said 1758 then 8 crossed out and changed to a 9. William's entry immediately above has been left as an 8.

below Jenny Squier is a Jenny Pomfret d/o John and Mary Pomfret, also on 16 Feb and that looks like it originally said 1757 and the 7 changed to 8.
Above William Squier is a Timothy Gedding or Redding and his burial says Dec 13th 1757.
Above Timothy are a sequence all in 1757.

On the following page (after Jenny Pomfret) they start at March 1758.

So I think Jenny Squier died in Feb 1758 and the vicar knew that the new year numbering started in January and correctly  put 1758 for William and originally for Jenny Squier, then had a senior moment and put 1757 for Jenny Pomfret. When he went back to correct her entry also added a year to Jenny Squier without thinking, although it was right in the first place.

Otherwise the John who married in July 1758 would not have been widowed by then, if Jenny didn't die until Feb 1759
