Medal Card WW1
« on: Sunday 11 October 20 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hi

I’m trying to work out which medals F.Butler would have received, his was the 13th Canadian Regiment. I know he received the DCM and the bar as well as the Victory Cross but I can’t find whether he received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Is that something they are automatically given?

Thanks in advance

Campaign Medals for WW1 were:

1914 Star (aka Mons Star)  OR  1914-1915 Star
British War Medal
Allied Victory War Medal

The British War Medal was awarded to officers and men of the British and Imperial Forces who either entered a theatre of war or entered service overseas between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918 inclusive.

The Victory War Medal had different designs, designed by each of the Allies countries.
It was awarded to al those who had ne of the Stars, and most of those who had the War Medal.

For Canadian entitlement, see:

I’ve done that. The one I attached is from his Canadian War Records and the one from the Medal Rolls only refers to his DCM and bar

It doesn't appear that the Canadian Forces used Medal Index Cards?

There is a mention on the card you attached which implies he was awarded an "M.C."?
But I am unsure as to what that refers to?

I would say that if he received the 1914-1915 Star, then he would have almost certainly received a Victory Medal and a War Medal.

I had a typo on the original post, I had wondered whether the MC referred to the Military Cross?

The LG xxxxx written on the card refers to the London Gazette issue where you should find him mentioned. Eg the LG 31583 against the MC is here https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31583/supplement/12354
