Where is Park Crescent, Clapham?
« on: Sunday 11 October 20 23:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

My family lived at 76 Park Crescent in Clapham from 1919 until 1944. Park Crescent doesn’t exist by this name anymore; can anyone confirm if it was renamed Clapham Crescent; if not what happened to it or where was it situated?

Present day Clapham Crescent (off Clapham Park Road) is part of the William Bonney Estate which I believe was built about 1930. Is Park Crescent and Clapham Crescent one and the same? Are both synonymous with the William Bonney Estate? I live locally but visiting the Estate hasn’t helped.

Thanks!

Though built in the 50s according to Barry’s link, I agree that building does have a somewhat 30s look to it.  :)

Thanks for sharing those links. I guess Park Crescent was demolished and replaced by Clapham Crescent. I’m surprised that the William Bonney Estate was built in the 50s, although it fits with my family living at Park Crescent until 1944. However, the link below states 1930s, and it looks VERY 1930s in style.

1949 map   https://old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/529520/175272/13/101329
now re-named Clapham Crescent

1951 map - area unchanged

1954 map   https://old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/529520/175272/13/100765

The '49 map shows house numbers (those that are left!). Don't know if these numbers reflect the 1919-1944 period?

West London Observer, 2 April 1909
For sale by auction
CLAPHAM COMMON - - Three freehold old fashioned, bow windowed Private Houses with capital gardens, Nos 74, 75 and 76 Park Crescent, Clapham Park Road, close to South London Tube Station; producing £113 10s.; frontage 73 ft, depth 124 ft: available for extended development.

Re maps, you will need to scroll slightly south east to view Park/Clapham Crescent

Really helpful, thank you! Clearly the address in question was demolished and replaced by the William Bonney Estate.

It is odd to see those few houses still standing on the crescent for several years.

I did wonder if bomb damage may have been the reason the houses on the crescent were demolished but Bombsight didn’t show any which had fallen on the crescent.

I know post war that it understandably took some time for any rebuilding works to be completed.

You might find more information, dates, plans etc at the local council offices - there is probably a department that deals with such matters.  ;)
