National Archives - Copying Service
« on: Monday 12 October 20 16:10 BST (UK) »
It's been years since I ordered anything from the National Archives, but I'm trying to help someone who would like a 3pp document from the National Archives and I don't want to give him wrong information.

I see that they have now partially reinstated their copying service, by limiting the ordering time to week-ends only (to give them time to process the orders with the limited number of staff available).  Now it seems to involve an initial payment of £8.40 (search fee) and then a price per page of what one wants copying.  So, using my friend's 3pp document as an example:

£8.40 + (£1.35 x 3) = £12.45, so would that be the total amount he has to pay, please?

Thanks
STG

I thought it was still free?

I ordered a document a few weeks ago, and was sent it as a PDF, for no charge.
Are you ordering a paper document by post?

Romilly.

The document he wants hasn't already been digitised, so it's not part of the free-for-now deal, unfortunately.

That makes sense then.

I think that you can visit to copy yourself still, but would have to pre book.

Well, yes, but my friend is very elderly and lives about 3 hours away by train (and I'm not much closer)  so visiting in person isn't an option  :( .

In any case there are no self-service copying services available for visitors to TNA.

If you're sure you have the correct and full document reference, and you're sure it's only 3 pages, then that would appear to be correct. You can reduce the cost slightly by having digital copies instead of b/w paper copies.

Thanks.  I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that he will be able to get what he's after.
