 Morris PONDICK  born in Russia
Census writer  has crossed out and rewritten origin of his wife  Jennie nee LIPSHUTZ/LIPSCHITZ

It looks  like Lapland RUss....... transcribed as Russia

Some trees say shes from Poland

I think she may be from Latvian Russia like my dna match

But her father s origins clearly stated as Lithuania as.is a neighbours on the same census

.... interpretation of different European countries is wide but ive never seen Lapland described as part of Russia before
Any opinions ....what do you read ?

The couple had beeen married 43 years*   and were naturalized in 1902

*Correction sorry im not used to America census its age 45  & 43 respectively

Trees on Ancestry have Jennie as born 1877 alternative spellings LIFSHITZ could it also be LITVENCHICK

Also they have her  arriving in usa 1891

 marrying age 18  in 1895 New York

 I misread marriage age  *corrected

I.ll go back to look at original

1910 has them both as from Russia morris arriving 1881 & jennie 1891

Ive found Morris PONDICK s naturalization but its white on black so very difficult for me to read
It doesnt look like it mentions wife or children

I dont know how I llink match.to jeannie Lipshutz
But the surname has come up a few times in dna matches.

If she came from jacobstadt.courland.Latvia it would be a definite lead to follow

Her.mother in laws surname was Brody which.is surname of family my great grandfather lodged with when he first arrived in UK from Riga Latvia

Called "a quiet evening in Poltava"

I don't know if they think/know that she's from Poltava ( now Ukraine..JT in chatterbox for the look up)

Or if there is a family connection to the painter
or if it's just an illustration of *shetel life ...

My matches with varieties of the Lifschitz  are all Jewish ethnicity so im guessing yes it is a Jewish name ..

It looks more like Lepland than Lapland.
Latvia is known in German (also sometimes in English) as Lettland so I expect that name was written down as heard.
