Not sure the word starts with an L. Compare with the L of Lithuania further down the list. There appears to have been some corrections made to the place name, possibly to make it into a P to me, so Pap...something.  :-\

infringement"

Probably not. Mostly paintings etc. could be copyrighted but that is unlikely as it quite old. And copyrights do expire.

My theory was that the L had been changed to a L
rus added above in small words

Because a  transcriber/moderator  believed it to be POLAND RUSSIA
Probably like me thought LAPLAND  improbable + had seen others with russian Poland as country of origin

Johns idea about Lepland being a word for Latvia is the theory I hope is right ...I don't know what language they would have spoken but hadn't been in UK long

The original transcrber obviously understood that the country was NOT  Russia or Lithuania. (they appear in other columns)

Re the painter
Its showing life in 1900
But the painter died recently so it would be subject to copyright tho available to observe  on internet
With others of the Steppes etc

Hi
For the notes pile =
On the Lithuanian western coast is Palanga and just north of Palanga into Latvia is Liepaja.
No info as to which parts of Russia they were in 100 years ago.
Add to that the wife can neither read nor write . . . . .

Not a  lot of help, but interesting.

Poland was part of Germany at one time and then Russia.  It was split at one time between Germany, Austria and Russia.

I have ancestors from what is today Lithuania.  The old records state born:   Poland/Russia;  Poland/Germany or Russia.  Its take your pick as it seems Poland was like a "ping-pong"country at one time.

Thanks steve problem is some tree or dna matches
Dont show up if we each choose different countries

Also having read some stories it was a long slow journey for some people so they really were born marrried living and buried in different countries .

It makes matches even harder when the places are misrecorded or  when adults didnt know their own origins .

At port arrivals the question where are you from could be interpreted as "
which country were you born in " or
"which country did you leave from"
