Date of Marriage.
« on: Thursday 15 October 20 22:23 BST (UK) »
Wanted a Certificate of Marriage which took place in Ruthin Denbighshire in J 1940.  Registers from that period held at Rhyl Register office.
Phoned Rhyl - they will only issue a certificate if the exact date of marriage is known - knowing the quarter is not enough.
Fortunately can order it from the G.R.O.

One wonders how local register offices index BMDs.  Do they have some kind of complicated system so the record can only be found with full details?

If it was me I would have an alphabetical list of names, year, whether it was a B, M or D with a ref. no. then go and look in the relevant register.  But maybe that's not how they work.

Probably more to do with identity theft and fraud?
Whatever, local Register Offices don't use the same system as the GRO.

Can this cert be found using NorthWalesBMD?

yes, found it on North Wales BMD - wonder if local Reg Office in Rhyl would supply certificate if their reference number was given or would they still want the exact date of the marriage. Thanks
Have ordered it from GRO

As far as I am aware, whoever you ordered it from it wouldn't make any or much difference in price, which is 11.00 if ordered online.

I think some local registry offices would charge for postage even if you order online, but I'm not sure about that.

Unlike births and deaths, which are registered in the register office, marriages can be registered in any one of a number of churches throughout the district. This means that unless they've been indexed locally (not all have), there could be dozens of registers to plough through till they find the right entry.

Enquiries to local register offices about marriage certificates often produce the response that they need to know which church it was in, and then there would be only one register to search through. It actually seems quite generous on the part of this office that if you give them the exact date they'd be prepared to look through a number of registers for you.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
