Place of birth, Hatton or Hutton and is this anywhere near Lymm?
« on: Friday 16 October 20 01:44 BST (UK) »
Have a William Jackson born abt 1796 on the 1851 census of Lymm.  Clip attached.  Subsequent census he lists himself as born Lymm.  Can anyone verify the writing of place of birth.  Understand Hatton didn't have a parish church, what would be the most likely place for a baptism?

Thanks in advance.

Judy

His birthplace in 1851 is Stretton . Cheshire

From what I can see it was a small place, probably just a hamlet, no church.   Stretton just south of Warrington, and Lymm east of Warrington on the map so not that far between them.

Where he'd have been baptised I have no idea I'm afraid.

Stretton about 7 miles west of Lymm.
It looks as if there's a very small place called 'Hatton' only a mile or so west from Stretton..............
Both only about 5 miles south of Warrington.

Stretton has a church and I think is too far away to be referred to as Lymm in later census

However in the 1841 census there is this entry in Lymm.

Statham Lodge Thomas Jackson 35 land agent

Dittoed as Statham Lodge but new household
William Jackson 40
Betty Jackson 45
Thomas Jackson 15 apprentice

Thomas Jackson the son of William and Betty Jackson was christened at Lymm Parish Church on 13 October 1822. Abode given as Statham.

Could Statham be what is written on the 1851 census?

Thomas Jackson was christened in Lymm in 1802 the son of Thomas and Betty Jackson.

Could Thomas and William be brothers?

Thank you for your replies. William (b 1796) was married in Lymm 1821 to Betty Jackson (daughter of Thomas Jackson and Betty Brazendale).  His marriage entry shows he was living in that parish when married. His wife Betty (Jackson) Jackson had a brother Thomas, born 1802, who later became the land agent, so Thomas would have been the brother-in-law to William and believe he was a witness to the marriage.

Anything I have found involves Statham, other than this 1851 census, yet no baptism in Lymm can be found. FindMyPast has 46 entries for a William baptism (in Cheshire) between 1794 and 1798, CPRP database has fewer entries, Ancestry has 49, none of these in Lymm.  Maybe he was never baptized?  I have another couple in Lymm that claimed they were born there, research says they were born in Manchester area, so I am inclined to be skeptical.

Is there a good map of Cheshire where I can widen the circle from Lymm and possibly match closer parishes with the baptism entries?

Thanks again for your help.

Try this site for area info & maps. Also look at Bowdon CHurch, the mother CoE for the area. A lot of people were non conformist in the area, Methodsit /Congregational /RC etc
