Unlikely Story
« on: Friday 16 October 20 14:54 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I've had the DNA test done and been conncected to a distant relative related through  his great grandma and her brother, my great great grandfather. We've shared some stuff and he has mentioned an old story he heard which I have never heard and do not feel is true, but he tells me...

'The only other thing I know of the Jones is that Charlotte's father had owned a ship in Liverpool which sank, leaving the family destitute. So, in search of work, the family moved to Oldham where the mills were'.

The George mentioned above is George Halsall Jones born in 1853 to Robert Halsall Jones and Catherine Palmer Parr in West Derby. I've looked at lots of things for G H Jones but i've never heard anything about a ship and no mention of anything nautical apart from a possible record for a George H Jones going to sea on a ship called the Virginia in 1869.

Can anyone see anything at all about him ever being otherwise involved in any ships please?

Many thanks, Luke

George Halsall Jones was a 30 year old mechanic when he married in 1885 Chadderton.
Prior to that he was living with his parents in 1861 age 7.

Where do you have him in 1871 and 1881

Hi Rosie99, yes that is the correct Charlotte.

I have George Halsall at the following places;

1861 Census, 13 Wavertree Vale, Wavertree aged 7 and a scholar
1891 Census, 18 Mowbray Street, Oldham aged 37 and a Machine Planner
1901 Census, 56 Waterloo Street, Oldham aged 46 and an Iron Planner
1911 Census, 26 Watercroft Street, Oldham aged 56 and an Iron Planner

I do not have him on the 1871 or 1881 census at all. Perhaps he really was at sea!

Luke

Thanks, Luke

His father mother and siblings are at 16 Wavertree Vale in 1871, in 1881 his father Robert Halsall Jones has died and his mother Catherine is at 2 Mowbray Street in Oldham

Hiya Luke - I am a bit puzzled
you say George was born 1853 - his parents didn't marry until  4th sept 1853
I can't find a baptism foe GEORGE - AT GEORGES marriage in August 1885 it says he is 30 - if he was b 1853 he should be 32
...............................................................................
Marriage: 4 Sep 1853 St Mary the Virgin, West Derby, Lancashire, England
Robert Halsall Jones - 19, Clerk, Bachelor, West Derby
Catherine Palmer Parr - 21, Spinster, West Derby
    Groom's Father: John Jones, Blacksmith
Bride's Father: William Palmer Parr, Nail Manufacturer
Witness: Uriah Halsall; Mary Woods 3 years later Robert is running a Pub - this is Georges brother
Baptism: 5 Oct 1856 St Mary the Virgin, West Derby, Lancashire, England
Uriah Halsall Jones - [Child] of Robert Halsall Jones & Catherine Halsall
    Born: 19 Aug 1856
    Abode: West Derby
    Occupation: Publican
...............................................................
I have a sneaky feeling that George Halsall Jones is possibly baptised  URIAH Halsall Jones - or am I wrong - could you post  your baptism record for George please ??  so I can delve further
added
Uriah was born 19th aug 1856 - do you have Uriah in your census results with George ?
