I should have kept looking at the aftermath of the accident ... there are also reports of the Chairman of the Navigation Committee, one of the directors of the Watermen's Company and William POPE, "father of the waterman whose boat was swamped ..." complaining about the position of Mr WELLS' spars encroaching too far into the river. Again, it's a very long article - happy to copy and email to you if you're interested.

The Times, 24 Aug 1840, refers to a " ... Mr Recknell, a Custom-house agent, ..." (no given names/initials)
