Thanks Carole.  Joel I think changed jobs.  I noticed his dad Joseph was a farmer but both at some point on the earlier census'S were miners too

Looking at the 1903 marriage cert for James Norbury & Martha - father is Joel but he is a farmer & deceased

This answers my q in my other reply.  Martha Ann redfearn did marry John Bocking.  Susannah Newton must be related to Mary Newton, Joseph redfearns spouse.

Regarding the two Baptism records for Joel redfearn, one may,  one Nov any ideas

Birth Index for Albert Norbury
West Derbyshire Lancashire
Registered July--Sept 1921
Mothers maiden name Redfern

This could be a possibility  why you couldn't find Martha on the 1881 census
There is this family at 81 ,Houghton Street Brightside Bierlow Yorkshire
John Bocking age 50 born Abney Derbyshire
Martha A Bocking age 38 born Windmill Derbyshire wife
Oswald Redfearn age 28 born Windmill Deryshire brother in law
Mary A Redfearn age 16 born Great Hucklow niece
Martha Redfearn age 3 born Great Hucklow niece
