Cullis family of Calne - Who was Walter's father?
« on: Sunday 18 October 20 14:30 BST (UK) »
The Cullis family don't appear in my tree until the 1760s when Sarah Cullis married Adam Williams at Bremhill. There are certain families in my tree who interest me more than others and the Cullis' are an interesting bunch (to me anyway  ;D).

I've managed to trace Sarah's line back to her grandfather Walter Cullis of Calne. He married Mary Browne (b.1679) on 19 June 1706 at Devizes and I believe he was the same Walter Cullis who was buried at Calne on 4 January 1737. There is no record (so far) of Walter's baptism in the Calne parish registers, I've browsed the original images from 1674 to 1690 and there's no trace.

I suspect he may have been the son of either Richard, John or Thomas Cullis who married the following women:

Thomas m. Mary Barnes 1655 at Calne
Richard m. Elizabeth Ball at Calne on 29 June 1664
John Cullis m. Magdalene Audry? in June 1684 at Calne

I've also found a list of Wiltshire soldiers wounded in the English Civil War from GenFair that reads: "Richard Cullis of Studley, Calne, served under Lord General Ruthen in company of Captain Roger Banninge. Lost both of his eyes with a shot. 40s per year plus 10s".

I'm leaning towards either Thomas or John as Walter's father as he had sons by those names. Any suggestions about where to look next?  ???

Any idea how old this Walter was please to help with a year of birth?

The burial doesn’t give him an age unfortunately but his wife was baptised in 1679, it may have been a similar time for Walter.

I think I can rule out Richard as his father... I’ve found a 1705 will for Richard in which he mentions his wife Elizabeth and his children, Edmund, Katherine and Elizabeth. No Walter.

Can see from the Will on Ancestry of

Edmund BROWNE, occupation: Barber of Devizes -  (1712)

Mentions his Wife: Elizabeth

Sons, Edward, John and Elizabeth

+ Mary, Wife of Walter CULLIS.

--

Walter and Mary's children (in order of birth)

Elizabeth
Ann
Walter
Thomas
John

(I'd go for Walter's father being a Thomas)

There is a christening at Calne, 31 January 1663, Thomas CULLIS, son of Thomas
also a Son named : John, 13 December 1672

Thanks for your thoughts, Capetown. I didn’t know about the 1712 Browne will so that’s really useful.

I noticed quite a few entries in the Calne parish registers are unreadable so I suspect Walter’s baptism was in there at some point! I agree, I do think Thomas was more likely. Would you say the 1655 marriage for Thomas Cullis and Mary Barnes is perhaps too early for a couple baptising children in 1663 and 1672?

Females  in those days had children for a couple of decades.  My Grandmother (in Wiltshire)  had 13 children between 1886 up to 1908, my Dad being the second youngest, then myself the youngest of four.  The Marriage Act of 1929 raised the minimum age to 16, before then females could marry aged 12 and males aged 14.  My Grandmother was 16 and my Grandad 18.  My x Grandmother in 1820 was 14.
