McDonald/McGilvray
« on: Monday 19 October 20 11:35 BST (UK) »
I'm doing research for a friend and as I don't live in Scotland I'm finding it difficult! I've had some fantastic help with another part of the family but am now stuck with this side.

I've found the marriage of Malcolm McDonald to Mary McGilvray on 15th Aug 1848 in Tiree and have worked the family to the 1881 census with Malcolm aged 71 a pauper in Scarnish Tiree.

Malcolm's age differs from census to census and he gives his place of birth as Argyllshire so is there any hope of getting any further back?

Jenny
Just seen that he was born in Tiree on 1871 census.

There are quite a number of births for Malcolm at Tyree, Argyll and Bute on
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Is there anyway you can reduce the span of years and do you know the names of their children?

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

I wonder if this is the death, it ties in with the 1881 census you mention.

MALCOLM MCDONALD age 79 died 1890 Tyree (Argyll)

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

I am guessing that this is the Valuation Roll for Malcolm, every 10 years, not there 1895.

MALCOLM MACDONALD Tenant Occupier CROFT BALPHAIL   TIREE AND COLL (ARYGLL)   1855 - 1885

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Hi Colin

thank you for your reply.
These are the children I have found
Jane 1851  Catherine 1853  Hugh 1855 Neil 1857 (died 1857) Ann 1858  Christina 1863 and FLora 1864.

I can't find Christina or Flora on 1871 census as Malcolm is a widower by that time living in Scarnish.

Possible record for Malcolm?

MCDONALD   MALCOLM   - HUGH MCDONALD/ANN CAMPBELL   02/02/1816   Tyree

By the way I note the marriage was on Coll.
MCDONALD   MALCOM   MARY MACGILVRAY   15/08/1848   Coll

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

That seems to fit with the children's names too. I've just found a death for Christina b 1863 d 1863 but still looking for Flora.

When I found the marriage the ref was Tiree & Coll so I wasn't sure as I'm totally lost with the registration districts etc.

Thanks for all your help.

The obvious first step is to look at the death certificate that ColC found. It should tell you the full names of Malcolm's parents, including his mother's maiden surname, assuming of course that the informant knew that.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
