City of York
« on: Tuesday 20 October 20 08:52 BST (UK) »
Apologies for what may sound like a very silly question  ;D

I have 2 census records (Thanet district) with the wife states "City of York" as to where she was born. The birthdate for Frances is around 1787 and she moved to Thanet around 1809

Is Frances referring to the Yorkshire district?.... which is around 450km from Thanet.

Yes it says "City of York". Perhaps she was a soldier's daughter.

Yorkshire, as a county, was divided into the 3 Ridings (North Riding, West Riding and East Riding) PLUS the City of York - which was usually considered separately.

Ok, that will help narrow my search for her parents.
I had a possibility in Bradford which I can now rule out

People were surprisingly mobile in those days.  One branch of my family made the trip in the opposite direction, originating in Kent and ending up in County Durham.

Too true... The daughter in this case of Frances married in Thanet and the family then emigrated to South Australia in 1849.
