William Jewson
« on: Tuesday 20 October 20 13:39 BST (UK) »
Iím trying to find information relating to William Jewson (senior). Iíve hit a dead end.

His son, also named William, emigrated to South Australia in 1857 on the passenger ship Sumner when he was 14 years old, with his mother Mary (36yrs) and his sister Sarah Ann. William juniorís South Australian marriage records lists his fatherís name as William.

The 1851 England census lists Mary, William, and Sarah Ann living in Tilney St Lawrence, Norfolk. The 1851 census also lists Mary Jewson as a widow, so whoever William (senior) was, he had to have died before 1851.

I canít find any record of a William Jewson marrying a Mary in the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire area. Thereís quite a clan of Jewsons living in Norfolk at the time, but I havenít been able to definitively link them to this family. Sarah Annís baptism record from 1842 doesnít list the father, and just has Mary Jewson listed.

Iíve been trying to untangle this for weeks. Let me know if things don't make sense. Itís possible Iíve gotten myself completely confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How old is everyone on that census please?  Can't find it at the moment.

Is there a matching birth registration for William Jewson junior.

William Jewson born Jun 1839 ** has MMN Barton so marriage before civil registration perhaps  :-\

If that is the correct MMN for Mary.

Mary Barton baptised 7 Mar 1819 Tilney St Lawrence parents William & Mary so that fits age wise.

If they did have a son in 1839 then they should be on the 1841 census together as Jewson.

**baptism has parents John a labourer & Mary like the marriage Rosie found so not father William.

Death for William age 0 in Mar 1840 so he won't be on a census.

Barking up the wrong tree perhaps or could father as William be an error and it really was John  :-\

Either way can't find a death for John Jewson that fits either.

Itís good to be here! :)

I havenít figured out how to reply to you all individually, so here goes.

Thank you rosie99! The record I found for Sarah Ann Jewson listed her baptism year as 1842, so the birth registration and marriage you have looks right! Thank you!

Yes Ladyhawk, Mary did remarry, sorry I forgot to mention. She married Robert Goff in 1856. They had two children, Catherine Sumner and James, who both died young in Saddleworth.

I could only access a snippet of William Jnrís marriage record transcript, so itís possible I got the wrong name, and his father is actually named John. Is it possible that William could have been Johnís middle name?

Thank you everyone for your help! :)
