Diary > Tuesday 20th October
« on: Wednesday 21 October 20 00:34 BST (UK) »
It had been another of those nights when I couldn't get to sleep and ended up eventually having only five hours' sleep. Was feeling a bit spaced out this morning as a result.

Arranged with my friend J to go for a walk tonight, decided to miss my regular one and do some gardening. Felt hungry so had some lunch before doing anything outdoors. It was sunny and very mild but I was feeling a bit down so didn't have my usual enthusiasm. Wasn't sure why I felt like that but having thought about it I realised that apart from a few words with the Tesco delivery driver yesterday I hadn't spoken to anyone since Friday.

Got myself outside, trimmed some plants and cut the lawn. Although it needs doing less it's still growing. Came in later for a cuppa, was feeling a bit better. Was getting absorbed in the book I'm reading, felt a bit guilty for not continuing with the gardening then thought how stupid that is, it's not a job I'm getting paid to do and it doesn't matter if I sit and do nothing all day.

Just after five went to meet J, we walked through some woods while we can, it'll get too dark to do that before long. We're still planning on having a regular walk although it will probably mean walking the streets instead of woods and fields.

It was dark when I got home, had tea and was watching TV  when a friend phoned. Although I don't often see her these days I still class her as one of my closest friends. She works in the care system and has a busy time generally. We talked for a couple of hours, it was good to chat.

Bath and bed to read more of my book.

So the BIG question Roobarb, is what book are you reading? Glad you find it so absorbing. :D
Clearly it is important to be getting out of the house for walking everday if you can, or gardening if walking is off for any reason, but no, you do not have to be gardening when you don't feel like it, and zero levels of guilt necessary.
It must be very hard not going places where you can converse and socialise with other people, but you do chat on the phone to people quite often, and picking up the phone when you are feeling isolated is a useful compromise.
Up late yesterday, 07:45 gosh, and a slow start, but eventually gathered the mental strength to sally forth for the weekly grocery shop. Never a favourite pass time, but these days it always feels like Russian roulette, and I really hate it. The store seemed quite busy; more shoppers than I anticipated, and fewer tills open. Must make a point of getting out early on grocery day, we have let that slide which is foolish, though I am not ready to relinquish control to click and collect yet.
The reward was an  impulse bag of "special soy, ginger & garlic spiced egg noodles" for 8p which we enjoyed with some very nice reduced fresh salmon fillets at £2.44. A tasty dinner for £1:26 each. Bargain!!
During lunch there was talk on the radio of abandoning putting the clocks back, on the premise that there is no need for light in the mornings, and it would be far more useful in the evenings. For those that don't have to be out and about early I can point out it was still pitch dark at 07:20 this morning, and still dusky at 07:48, which is horrible, and dangerous for people who have to get to work before 8 in the morning.
Walked along the seafront, the sea was wild and the wind was howling, but not cold. Oddly, one of the Dutch cruise ships anchored close into the Bay has gone.
Caught up with the David Walliams WDYTYA which I did find interesting, and then watched a programme about the Vikings.
Hope you all have a reasonable day.

Well I don’t know what happened to my post from last night that I was going to finish off it’s done a disappearing act..... so here is go again!

Roobarb, sorry you had a down day but pleased to hear it ended with a nice walk with your friend J..... always nice to have a good book to read...

All these new tiers are taking some getting used too and the restrictions on so many people in the country is looking grim.... but if people followed what was asked of them perhaps we wouldn’t be in this new situation.... anyway don’t get me started on that one.....

After two very busy days I slept like a log resulting in not even remembering posting half a post on Monday!
When I came downstairs to make a cuppa I glanced into the dinning room and saw all the glasses still on the table.... no fairies had visited in the night 😢 so it was left to me to empty the dish washer, wash the glasses, clear the table...
Ever wish there were things you hadn’t done..... because clearing up all the little 70’s and tiny silver stars I’d scattered on the table was one of them! I put them all in a little tub as I’ll use them to make shaker cards for the three 70 th birthdays next year....but I am going to finding little silver stars everywhere!
OH made an appearance, now I’d finished, saying he was going to do all that whilst I was at Tuesday morning coffee!...
Bit late chum it’s all done... he looked heartbroken!.... oh no he didn’t!
Off up the lane for coffee... three of us today, friends who’d been to dinner on Monday... we were all feeling a bit jaded but still found plenty to chat about....
By the time I returned home OH was making lunch... very good of him!
I’d still got about three quarters of my friends delicious Black Forest gateau left so we very carefully cut it in half prized it from the cake stand and I managed to get it into the freezer with a lot of jiggling stuff around...
I decided to give my fridge freezer in the kitchen a clean and sort out...
Having not done any sewing for some time I went to finish the face coverings and need to label the 11 🌈 tops, finish the bunting...
At 5pm we watched the Downing St bulletin to hear and see all the graphs and it was quite a sobering experience to see how the rates have increased and hear that Manchester has more hospitalised people than the whole is South & West of England..... is their Mayor a complete Idiot to be resisting tier 3.... and why should they have more money than anywhere else... what makes Manchester so special... I’m afraid it really got my hackles up... he’s just making political capital from all this... so I was very pleased Boris stamped his authority over AB’s! Who clearly hasn’t much consideration for the people of the city despite what he says..,, enough of that!😤😤
C called to pick up dishes etc from last night and we were able to make a direct payment to her... worth every penny and took the stress out of cooking, although I do enjoy it but had wanted something a bit special!
Dinner was chicken in white wine and herb sauce and we finished off the veg from Monday that was left...
Watched university challenge and WDYTYA... I thought David Walliams cane over very well and felt sorry he’d had two great grandfathers with disabilities.... I won’t say anymore I case others haven’t seen it yet!

Always great to read about your days, everyone who posts is very active and even your quieter days are interesting.

Only just a point.

Andy Burnham in Manchester was trying to secure £90m of funding to ensure T3 would work at its best by giving people 80% of their wages and would include self-employed.

When people have to try and exist on a lower percentage of already living wage/minimum wage then staying at home is naturally worse.

So less about resisting important disciplines than ensuring people could manage.

Keep up the diary entries!  ;D

Weird sort of day today. Usual routine of looking after the grandchildren ( we are a childcare support bubble), but alongside that , a friend was diagnosed with cancer yesterday afternoon. He's now at least going to be on a cancer pathway but it's all the other things that are an extra struggle due to covid. Eg getting in touch with the gp to get a prescription charges exemption certificate. The same gp who couldn't see him weeks ago because of covid as they had no appts and who still didn't have any appts this Monday so he had to ring 111 who said ring 999 for an ambulance! As he said last night, it's getting past the receptionists that's the issue at his surgery......

That's a terrible thing to hear, Candleflame. I hope your friend manages to get the support he needs from now on.
Caroline you have certainly been very busy over the past few days/weeks. Roobarb, I'm finding a good book a great solace during these times. I feel very concerned about folk on their own at present and try to keep in contact with lone friends one way or another.
Mowsehowse, I also ventured into my previously favourite store Mxxxxxx's to do a small shop before 10 in the morning. It was the busiest I'd seen for a number of weeks. I don't feel comfortable there any longer. The checkouts were chaotic, few staff and nobody seemed to know where they were going. I quickly popped into the card shop which was empty and purchased a few birthday cards for the months ahead. The new Christmas card selection filled nearly half the shop. It really made me feel strange. How can people contemplate Christmas at a time like this? I had spoken to old friends at the weekend and found out it was their Diamond wedding soon so I was able to buy an anniversary card for them. I bought a plain anniversary card, which had a lovely verse inside and then tarted it up a bit with silver numerals and enclosed rose petals from the garden! OH and I decided we do our walk again after lunch, changing the route a bit, as has been suggested. Never seen such a crop of conkers before, many still beautiful and shiny lying on the floor amongst their broken cases. Fish and chips tonight! Plaice bought from our Grimsby fishmonger on Monday. It's getting difficult trying to remember what I did the day before.

Normally there would be 8 of us for Christmas, we are at the moment in phase 1, for however long, I was talking to my daughter about Christmas, we really have to be as normal as possible, we will celebrate in perhaps a smaller way, we might just be on our own Christmas day, I actually don't really mind, or we might be 6 of us, that means our daughter will spend the rest of the day with 2 others making their party 6 people, I am really not bothered if we are on our own, done it before as I know others have, so we have to keep things happy, send out our usual cards to send others our  Christmas s greetings, Christmas won't be frightened away by Covid, might just be different, same as birthdays, we can't celebrate birthdays either  in the way we might have done this year, but next year, I certainly intend to be around to celebrate the next birthday
Christmas is the time of goodwill, lets hope we can share it as difficult as things might have become this year
Who is making Christmas puddings this Sunday?, stirrup Sunday

That's very encouraging LM. I was dusting/polishing the staircase today  and said to myself We Shall Have A Christmas Tree This Year! I've never made a Christmas Pudding but made Christmas Cake and, of course mincepies. Any suggestions?
