Any idea what "vic for" signifies on a marriage record?
« on: Wednesday 21 October 20 21:35 BST (UK) »
On a Catholic marriage record I'm looking at in the "denuntiationes" column (which is for impediments to the marriage) it says "Vic For." I have gotten as far as figuring out this means Vicarius Foraneus, or Vicar-Forane, but I have no idea what this might signify about the marriage. Any ideas?

This is for the 8 Jan 1879 marriage of Cornelius Mahony of Coolkeragh to Johanna Stack in Ballybunion, Kerry.

Searching gave this . . . . .

"Senior  member,  in  length  of  service,  of  any  profession,  field,  etc.."

I would take it as the "rank" of the clergy involved.

However . . . . .

A diocesan bishop may delegate the power to dispense certain impediments to a vicar forane.  I would take this notation to mean that a dispensation was obtained from the V.F.

Are you sure it's a V, not a L. [lic. instead of vic.]

Well, it sure looks like V rather than L. But apart from that, what license would there be?

Here's a link to the image: https://imgur.com/a/LUFH8by

Looking at the nearby pages, it looks like other marriages marked with "Vic For" in the "Denuntiationes" column had notes about consanguinity written in the "Impedimentum" column. For this marriage, there's a - in the impedimentum column. So I wonder if that means that this marriage did not have an issue related to consanguinity but something else relating to banns, etc.
