Diary > Wednesday 21st October
« on: Wednesday 21 October 20 23:48 BST (UK) »
Was out like a light last night and slept late this morning,  luckily the bins hadn't been emptied as I hadn't put mine out last night. Chucked on a sweatshirt and joggers and went to pull it through while the kettle was boiling. Made a cup of tea and took it back to bed to drink while I read the news and my book.

Was intending to change the bed, pulled back the duvet and left it till after my walk. Usual area, it was mild out although very cloudy. Looped back around the walkways, all the dog walkers in the area seemed to be coming towards me on the one leading back to the field. The world and his dog.

Home for lunch and more reading. Was debating whether to cut the front lawn, there's rain forecast to come down across the country from Scotland tomorrow although it doesn't show any on the local forecast. Was putting off emptying the dishwasher but got on and did it then got the mower out. Also trimmed some of the shrubs then got out the gadget for scraping weeds out of the block paving, they were sprouting all over.
Wasn't intending doing anything in the back garden but I started pulling some dead stuff out. There's a shrub that I must have planted when I first moved here, it's in the way but I've never managed to dig it out. Thought I'd have another go as the soil was wet. I didn't succeed so decided that instead I'd prune it right down. The stems were thick, I had the pruning shears wedged against the ground for leverage. Managed to do it, broke a bit of a sweat.

When I went indoors it was later than I thought, I'd been intending to do some painting but that didn't happen. I'd also forgotten to change the bed so just made it instead, will do it tomorrow.

Fish for tea, watched Portrait Artist, was disappointed with the finalists and the ultimate winner. In their efforts to have something different I think they overlook some real talent. Just my opinion.

Woke to pouring rain - one forecast that they did get right!!  I was being picked up at 12.15, heading for a nearby hostelry to have lunch to celebrate my sisters birthday.   Should have been sister, b-in-law, my niece, nephews wife and myself.   Nephews wife unable to come as she had a migraine and during the meal nephew himself arrived to deliver the presents and he had a coffee with us.  My niece looking well but says she has to have smaller meals now, and more often, as babies keep pressing on her stomach.   Hadn't been to this place since before initial lockdown but pleased to see stringent measures in place.  So nice to be able to get together.

Afterwards my b-in-law drove to a small garage in town to get a quote for some work on my car - car (Fiesta) was bought from John Grose some years ago now and have regularly had it serviced, mot'd by them.   However, being a large concern they are not cheap.   When last done in September told I needed a new cam belt (£600) and thermostat housing £160) having just paid over £300 for the service/MOT.   Gulp!   B-in-law spoke to a friend of ours yesterday who recommended this smaller garage who do all his own work.   Quote from them for both jobs £250.   Compared to £760 from JG no contest I'm afraid.  So it is booked in for next week.   At least I'll have peace of mind - don't do a lot of mileage even in normal times and almost nil since March.   A lot to fork out for a car that's currently hardly going anywhere.

On PC when I got home and then felt a bit tired (must have been the glass of wine I had lunchtime) so dozed for around an hour - then knitting again.   Just had a sandwich later.

Hope you're all well and keep safe.

Roobarb- sounds like a busy day you had .... I agree entirely with you about Portrait Artist Programme... I wasn’t keen on the three they choose in the first place either... and certainly the winning one wasn’t a patch on others.... in my opinion!
Annette - good to see you’re getting out and about to enjoy meals with family...it’s amazing how garages vary in price for repairs and pleasing you’ve found somewhere slot less expensive... as you say hard to justify large costs when you’re hardly used the car!

As promised it was a grey, wet dull day... had to put lights on as it was so dark... hate it when it’s like this...
After breakfast did some clearing up and cooking...
OH busy into his new jigsaw ....
Decided to do the ironing and finish putting labels on 🌈 tops, last of face coverings and make up the bunting. Finally finished everything, bagged it all up.
After lunch we had a game of scrabble which I won so now I’m two up again! 😁
Tidied up my work room then decided I’d cut some more face coverings as have some material left...
Cooked fish pie for dinner which we had with broccoli spears and asparagus.
Watched tv...
Early night as was really tired ... pretty uneventful day... hope weather is going to get better As have a mountain of washing to do...
Stay well and healthy and keep your chins up!

Hope you get a good feeling from a lovely tidy garden Roobarb.
Mind how you go with changing the duvet, I plumped my pillow yesterday morning and a finger nail snapped right off. :-\ Perhaps I need a softer pillow!
We had howling winds and heavy rain yesterday as well Annette, glad it didn't stop your lunch plans, and good job you found arecommended garage at a more affordable price.
Took a walk with H along the front past the pier after lunch, despite continued drizzle.
Met an elderly lady I know from my library groups, and we had a chat with her. Have put her in touch with another person we ran into a few weeks ago as they are both regretting the loss of the Scrabble group.
While I absolutely hated having to sit and be trounced on a regular basis, I knew it was a lifeline for many, and I am sad they are missing it so much. Hopefully those two ladies can work out something to bring them pleasure.
Put a roast in the oven for tea.
H bought the new Ken Follet book recently, but he is a very slow reader, so while he was tutoring on-line, I sneaked it and read the first 4 chapters. Really good.  (I will look at the book you are enjoying so much Roobarb. Thanks.)
Was really looking forward to "Repair Shop", but sadly I had seen every one of those before, so felt a tad disappointed. Celebrity Gogglebox didn't thrill me much either.
A bit of a nothing day again.... (you too Caroline,  ;) ) hope today is more worthwhile for everyone.

A really wet day so after OH did the vacuuming I got out the polish and duster. Still trying to catch up with friends we usually visit. Telephoned friends in Dorset and had a 30 minute conversation about the situation here and there. They live in an idyllic setting and not many cases around them. We shall not be seeing them this year then at all which is sad.

Started work on my halloween/pumpkin basket. Actually found my acrylic paints and painted 3 cut-out pumpkins. Lined an old basket with orange tissue paper, added leaves, acorns, conkers etc, together with a small real pumpkin purchased from Mxxxxxxxxs previously and placed it in the porch for passing children to see. When we visited Texas many years ago there were pumpkins everywhere, on people's lawns, in their porches and even on their roofs.

Texted and spoke to a friend to arrange an outing for Thursday if the weather is as good as predicted.

Such industrious ladies you all are!
Son brought  some fresh stuff for me then drove  me to Drs.
At the hospital on Tuesday ,I mentioned that as I was to continue with the latest eye drops, three lots, if my next appointment was longer than two weeks awayI would  run out .
The Specialist made out another prescription.
I had said how difficult it was getting to the hospital and would these drops be in my regular prescriptions as I had those delivered .Got the paperwork and I could go.
I could barely see ,and son waiting for a phone call to come back for  me ,an
hours drive .
Got home and realised the prescription was for the hospital pharmacy.
Tried all morning to get through to them ,then phoned Drs who said they could not help. my pharmacist was helpful and said in certain circumstances the Dr could do it.So off to Drs.
Hopefully it will not entail a journey to the hospital again.
What a palaver, but they set you free ,knowing you can hardly see , no one is allowed in with you ,you are a bit battered and bruised etc etc.

Well it is almost time to stop feeding the fish.
But that little ritual every morning, when they come to the side of the pond where I tap is a small pleasure .
Email from grand daughter, phone call from Flash Harry’s daddy ,and my daughter, saw son too.Other son not phoned, unusual as it is their Dad’s anniversary today .
Daughter sent a card with her Dad’s photo as the stamp.

Ordered two books for FH ,for Christmas.
Funny Bones and The tiger who came to tea .
FH needs new warm waterproof boots for winter so I said  to his Daddy, get
him  some Timberland ones from me for Christmas  .
I can transfer funds.
Grand daughter is 26 on 30 th, I will send money to her too,
Only last week I tried on some lovely cardigans I have  hardly worn  and which  anyway  now are too big for  me .
Daughter had bought grand daughter one ,I said I have five hardly worn and too big now.Shows on the shoulders .
They are ,really long well past my knees .Fully fashioned .
Navy, Taupe ,Ecru, Olive,Black .
I loved them with very smart trousers .
I will send a photo and get at least one posted for her to see.
I hate to lose them. But just doing nothing here .
I have shrunk considerably ,they don’t look right on me now.
She is tall so will wear them well .

Did a batch of apple sauce for the freezer after reorganising it.

Added to Tesco order ,after losing my slot ,I must not have completed the transaction ,was due  28 th but now 25 th.
No problem.
Well girls ,bedtime calls .
Hope you all have a good day tomorrow ,enjoy your walks and tidy gardens
and  feel relaxed that you / we are all doing well .
Goodnight ,Viktoria .

Hope you are feeling a bit better now V, I am guessing your vision has cleared for you to have typed all that?
The eye drops are vile aren't they? I had to have several examinations and laser treatment in 2018 and I found waiting for the effects of the drops to wear off very difficult. I remember sitting on a very sunny day in the Friends cafe, with my back to the window and wearing sunnies, waiting for H to collect me. My eyes were streaming tears and it was impossible to read, so I just had to sit there feeling horrible. You have my sympathies and I hope you are all sorted now.
Great choices of books for FH, I am sure he will love them.
I was flabbergasted to note that fish learn so quickly where they will be fed. I used to change position regularly, and they were really quick to catch on to it.  :D

Viktoria - hope you’re feeling back to your self now after the laser treatment...
What a debacle though trying to obtain the eye drops ... hope you’re able to resolve it without too much stress...

My grandsons haveThe Tiger who came to tea and they loved that book... there are so many wonderful books to choose from it’s hard to know where to start! You are certainly getting well organised with presents for your family...

Take care
