Cinirel seems to think he died more recently than 1944  :-\.   Is that 1946 birth his child.

Thanks all for your help.

I have ordered the birth cert so hopefully that will shed further light on him.

For the record Frederick and Phyllis had a son born in 1940 Frank Keith who took Phyllis's 2nd husbands surname (Thornton)
