my great great grandfather was born in Dreghorn Ayrshire Scotland in 1861, he married Janet Howat  in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland Dec 29 1882.
their first son Andrew Strachan was born in Dreghorn in Nov 17 1883, there second child Jean Walker Strachan was born in 1886 according to myheritage and ancestry the address given is Bureau, Illinois, United States.
their next child I believe is Robert Howat Strachan  born in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland 1892.
their next 2 children are also born in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, Scotland , I  have been unableto  find any emigration information for them either to or from the states "
there are many Strachans and I am wondering if I have the right people or not !
any help would be appreciated .

Elinga -- you haven't mentioned the father's name, nor when you think they may have emigrated - but I see the family are still in Scotland in 1901. His name was David Strachan born c. 1862.

This doesn't answer your question at the moment - but Robert Howat Strachan was sadly killed in action during WW1 on 6 Sep 1916. He was in the Highland Light Infantry.

Hence did the family emigrate AFTER WW1 do you know?

I think the idea is that the daughter Jean was born in the US and the other children were born in Scotland, so the immigration & return would have been in the 1883-1892 timeframe.

They seem to be back in Dreghorn for the 1891 census with Jean listed as Jane, brother Andrew, and sister Agnes M. who was age 4 and also born in America.

There is a lot of interesting information in the results to Googling "bureau county illinois 1888 coal mining", including separate articles on Spring Valley and Seatonville, Bureau County.

Seems there was a strike there in 1889. I wonder if that is why David returned.

"Are Birth Records Available for Genealogical Purposes?
Yes.  Uncertified copies of records prior to January 1, 1916, are at a cost of $10.00."

If you decide to request the records, I would contact them first. The strict requirements for getting a record that are mentioned on that page might not apply to records before 1916.
