For what it’s worth, I think the third letter is an s, last letter a y, so think it must be Casey as suggested by Mckha.

I agree aghadowey - seems like too much of a coincidence with a watchmaker at that address. It will be interesting to see if the owner can see what is under the torn piece of paper to see if it is Southall.

In the 1911 census, James Reeves is a watchmaker jeweller on his “own account” and “at home”. He is a widower aged 39 and has two small children, so depending on dates, maybe “H Casey” has taken over the shop?

Thank you for all your replies. For some reason I am not getting notifications for new messages on this thread, so apologies for my delay in replying.

In answer to the questions asked about hallmarks and the paper. There are no visible hallmarks , and the paper appears to be glued into the watch so it is not possible to look underneath it. The paper itself is so brittle that trying to unfold that tear would probably damage it even further.

Has your friend taken this to a specialist to have it dated or valued? I am willing to be corrected but I think this has some age to it judging by the engraving (and ignoring the battered nature of the watch).

You would expect there to be some marks on it somewhere though they might have worn off through use.

It probably doesn't have much monetary value (unless it is something rare or desirable), but it still rather lovely I think.

No they haven't Ruskie. I did wonder if it was very old. The only references I could find to John Cuthbird were from the 18th century.
